May 3, 2009: Los Angeles at Fleetwood

At risk of losing its first home series of the year, Fleetwood turned to Daisuke Matsuzaka. Los Angeles, in turn, called on veteran Mike Mussina.

With 2 outs in the bottom of the 3rd inning, and with Chris Iannetta at first base, Ronny Cedeno delivered a double for the Walkers. The cement-footed Iannetta had a 1-9 (45%) safe chance at home, and I had a decision to make. Given that Jason Bartlett was up next -- a hitter who struggles against right-handed pitching -- I decided to test my luck. It did not work out, though, as Iannetta missed the roll badly. By my count, it's the third time he's been thrown out at home for me through 17 home games thus far. (Perhaps I should stop trying now.)

Feeding off the big play, the Tigers scored two runs the very next inning. David Wright got one run back with a solo homer in the bottom of the frame. When Miguel Cabrera delivered a solo shot of his own in the 6th inning, the game was tied 2-2.

In the 7th, Los Angeles picked up back-to-back singles to start the inning. With runners on 1st and 3rd and nobody out, my team turned to strikeout artist Hong-Chih Kuo. Jamey Carroll was up, and the corners were in looking for a play at the plate. Carroll surprised everyone, though, with a perfectly executed squeeze play. Kuo retired the next two batters, but the Tigers had grabbed a 3-2 lead.

Fleetwood went down in order in the bottom of the 7th, and Los Angeles did the same in the top of the 8th. In the bottom of the inning, though, the Walkers attempted to mount a two-out rally.

First, Miguel Cabrera (1-10 runner) collected a single and was removed for pinch-runner Asdrubal Cabrera (1-14 runner). Los Angeles brought in Geoff Geary to face Carlos Beltran, and I hoped for an RBI double. While that didn't happen, I was happy to settle for an inning-extending single instead.

With Cody Ross up next, the matchup was not good for me. I decided to pinch hit with a lefty, and chose Rafael Furcal over Ryan Doumit. Furcal did not come through, though, hitting a groundout to end the threat.

I left Kuo in for a 3rd inning of work in the 9th, and he again retired the Tigers in order. I hoped for a single run in the 9th inning, but the Walkers also were retired in order. The game was over, and Los Angeles had earned a series win with a 3-2 victory. It was the first series loss for Fleetwood at home this season.
