April 24-26: Tinley at Fleetwood

Game 1: Tinley scored 2 quick runs in the 1st inning when Geovany Soto hit a homer off of Justin Duchscherer. "The Duke" settled down after that, though, and would not allow another run. Meanwhile, Fleetwood's Jason Bartlett hit a rare home run (a 3-run shot, no less) in the 4th inning to give the Walkers a 4-2 lead.

Following a one-out single by Soto in the 8th inning, Nate McLouth was up next for Tinley. I had my manager Rube Foster "play the percentages" and replace Duchscherer with lefty J.P. Howell. The move worked splendidly, as McLouth hit into an inning-ending double play.

In the bottom of the 8th inning, the Walkers plated 3 insurance runs. A two-out, two-run double by Ryan Doumit highlighted the scoring, although a cement-footed Chris Iannetta was thrown out at home to end an inning for the second time this year (bringing back memories of Opening Day). Unlike Opening Day, though, Fleetwood would win this one by a score of 7-2.

Game 2: Both teams pounced on each other early. After just 1 inning, the score was 3-3. However, whereas Fleetwood's bats quickly went cold, Tinley just kept on scoring. The Redbirds scored another run in the 2nd, and 4 more in the 3rd to drive A.J. Burnett out of the game early.

Fleetwood's bullpen came through with 6.2 scoreless innings, but a win was not meant to be. Tinley would win 8-4, with the game's star being Ryan Sweeney (3-4, 3 RBI, 2B, HR).

Game 3: Miguel Cabrera suffered through a poor month of April, but came through for Fleetwood on this day. He hit a 2-run homer in the 1st, and added an RBI single in the 3rd. When the Walkers scored 4 runs in the 6th on a 2-run double by Cody Ross and a 2-run homer by Ryan Doumit, the game was as good as over. Zack Greinke had earned another win, improving his season-to-date record to 4-0.

The series headed to Tinley for the next 4 games. In the first game, Fleetwood plated 5 runs in the 1st and Ervin Santana pitched a complete-game 6-hitter in a 6-1 win. The second game was closer, but Daisuke Matsuzka (6.2 IP, 2 R) and a rubber-armed Chad Billingsley (2.1 IP, 0 R) led Fleetwood to a 7-2 victory. The third game was close through 8 innings, with Justin Duchscherer and Wandy Rodriguez starring for each team on the mound. The Walkers exploded for 6 runs in the 9th, though, capped by a grand-slam by Ryan Doumit. In the final game, Tinley avoided a sweep with a 3-2 victory. They did so in dramatic fashion, taking the lead with 2 runs in the 8th off a wild Chad Billinglsey (who walked 3 and threw a wild pitch in the inning).

At the end of April, Fleetwood's record was a sparkling 21-7 (11-3 at home, 10-4 on the road). Its bullpen had some shaky moments -- and there were a few managerial blunders along the way -- but overall the team's performance was good enough for a 3-game lead over Ionia and a 4-game lead over Thousand Oaks.

One run was the difference at Busch Stadium as the Tinley Redbirds defeated
the Fleetwood Walkers 3 to 2.

Russ Springer(1-1) came on to close the door tight in relief. No one got on
base in his perfect 2 innings and struckout 4 Fleetwood batters. Tinley had
only 5 hits for the game.

Chad Billingsley(0-1) was given the loss in relief. With this win, Tinley has
a 8-14 record. They have been 3-7 lately. With the loss Fleetwood now has a
record of 3-1.

April 16-19: Superior at Fleetwood

Game 1: Superior's Boof Bonser and Fleetwood's Ervin Santana locked horns in a pitchers' duel. The Walkers scratched out a run in the 1st inning, then Superior scored a run of their own in the 5th. Superior then grabbed a 3-1 lead on a 2-run homer by Eric Hinske in the 7th.

In the bottom of the 7th, Superior brought in righty Nick Masset. Needing two runs, I pinch hit Ronny Cedeno for Asdrubal Cabrera. Cedeno came through with a double, and eventually scored on another double by David Wright. My move had worked, and Superior's lead was trimmed to 3-2.

Knowing it was vital that I not allow the Blues to score again, I brought in my best reliever in Hong-Chih Kuo in the 8th inning. He held Superior scoreless in the 8th, but surrendered 2 runs in the 9th. That made the score 5-3 in favor of Superior, which is how the game would end.

Game 2: Bouncing back for a loss the day before, Fleetwood jumped all over Superior's Livan Hernandez in the early innings. Specifically, the Walkers scored 6 times before the 3rd inning was over. Meanwhile, Daisuke Matsuzaka (7.1 innings) and Heath Bell (1.2 innings) held the Blues to a two-hit shutout. Final score: Fleetwood 7, Superior 0.

Game 3: Carlos Beltran gave Fleetwood an early lead with a 3-run homer in the 1st off Cha Seung Baek. The Walkers added another run in the 3rd, but Superior responded in a big way in the 4th inning off Fleetwood's Justin Duchscherer. First, back-to-back doubles by Adam Jones and Dan Uggla plated two runs. A 2-run homer by Justin Upton then tied the game 4-4 through 4 innings.

In the bottom of the 5th, Jim Edmonds drew a bases-loaded walk to give Fleetwood a 1-run lead. In the 6th, Carlos Pena hit a solo HR to put the Walkers up 6-4. At this point, I called on Chad Billingsley...who, in an attempt to maximize his innings used, I've turned to early-and-often throughout April. On this day, Billingsley did not disappoint. He threw scoreless frames in the 8th and 9th for the save, and Fleetwood would win 6-4.

Game 4: Fleetwood knocked Superior's Brian Burress out early in this one, scoring 3 runs on 7 hits in the first 3 innings. Superior answered back off A.J. Burnett with 3 runs in the 4th, and the game was tied 3-3. The Blues took the lead with a run in the 5th, but Fleetwood's Chris Iannetta delivered a 2-run double in the bottom of the same inning to give Fleetwood a one-run lead.

In the 8th, my team turned the ball over to lefty J.P. Howell. He retired the side in order, and started the 9th inning as well against lefty-hitting Eric Hinske. Hinske drew a walk, but Howell remained in to face "reverse-righty" Jeff Francoeur. After a Francoeur strikeout, Superior pinch hit with reverse-lefty Jeff Clement. I decided to turn the ball over to reverse-righty Heath Bell at this point, prompting the Blues to pinch-hit again...this time with the left-handed Brian Buscher.

Hinske stole second, followed by an RBI single by Buscher that tied the game! Buscher then prompty stole a base of his own, putting the go-ahead run on 2nd base. Bell stayed in, though, and retired Michael Bourn on a groundout. I then brought in reverse-lefty B.J. Ryan to face Kurt Suzuki. Suzuki walked to make things even more interesting, but Ryan retired Adam Jones to end the threat.

In the bottom of the 9th, lead-off hitter Nick Markakis sent the hometown fans home happily with a walk-off homer. Despite blowing a late-inning lead, the Walkers had won 6-5.

The next three games were held in Superior. In the first game, both bullpens struggled (including a blown 9th-inning save by J.P. Howell) and the game went into extra innings. In the 10th inning, Superior won when Adam Lind drew a bases-loaded walk off B.J. Ryan. The second game was far less dramatic, with Fleetwood winning handily by a score of 12-1. Ervin Santana threw a complete game in this win, striking out 12 against zero walks. The final game was even more lopsided, with the Walkers winning 16-3 and Daisuke Matsuzaka throwing a complete game of his own.

Through 21 games, Fleetwood's record stood at an impressive 16-5. Up next would be the Tinley Redbirds.

the final score was 12 to 1.

The Superior fans didn't appreciate the big day Wright had. He cracked a solo

home run (his 2nd of the season) in the 8th inning. Fleetwood had many
opportunities throughout the game and scored in 6 separate innings.

Boof Bonser(0-2) took the loss. He was touched for 4 homeruns in his 4
innings of work.

Santana, when asked about his 12 strikeout performance noted, 'The important
thing is that we won, if I get 20 and we lose, what good does it do our team?
But, on the other hand, since we won it feels great!'

Carlos Pena cracked 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI and Daisuke Matsuzaka tossed a
complete game as the Fleetwood Walkers crushed the Superior Blues 16 to
3.

Pena was in a groove all evening. The Superior fans hated to see him
approaching the batter's box. He delivered a one-base hit in the 1st inning,
belted a three-run homer in the 2nd inning, smashed a bases-empty 'big-fly'
(his 4th of the season) in the 4th inning and doubled in the 7th inning.
Fleetwood bats were very productive in the 2nd inning which saw them plate 5
runs on 5 hits and the 5th inning with 4 runs on 5 hits. Fleetwood dominated
offensively as they scored in 6 different innings.

Matsuzaka(1-0) was the winner allowing 3 runs for the game. Livan
Hernandez(0-1) was hit with the loss. He served up 3 homeruns in his 5
innings.

Pena was in a good mood after the game, 'I'm just seeing and hitting the ball
real well now. I made some adjustments last week and they are paying off.
That's what this game is about. making adjustments as the season goes along.'
