Fleetwood Stats through May (56 games)

Fleetwood finishes May with a 17-11 record (11-3 at home, 6-8 on road), leaving the Walkers one game behind Maine in the NL Central with a 35-21 season record.

Fleetwood's offense was a bit weaker in May than in April, scoring 145 runs (5.2 per game) versus 168 runs (6.0 per game) the month before. Its pitching and defense improved, however, allowing 109 runs (3.9 per game) in May versus 141 runs (5.0 per game) in April.

Given Fleetwood's total runs scored (313) and total runs allowed (250) on the season, its Pythagorean Record would be 34-22 (.611 x 28 games). As such, it appears the Walkers' record is almost exactly as should be expected (+1 wins over expectations).

Fleetwood continues to dominate right-handed starters (30-12), but still struggles versus lefty pitchers (5-9). These trends are both consistent with April's results.

Fleetwood's most exceptional players so far are Miguel Cabrera, David Wright, A.J. Burnett and Esteban Loaiza. Derrek Lee (.283/.372/.566 in May), David Wright (.356/.412/.574 in May), Dave Bush (4-2, 3.78 ERA in May) and Derrick Turnbow (1-0, 3 SV, 1.29 ERA) improved greatly on their April performances.

Players who are struggling the most so far are Marcus Giles, Jermaine Dye, Mark Buehrle and Greg Maddux. Jermaine Dye (.188/.247/.235 in May) and Neifi Perez (.215/.246/.292 in May) in particular came crashing down for their April highs.

All in all, May was another great month for Fleetwood. The team remains close to the divisional lead, and appears well-rested heading into June. Hopefully the pitching will continue to improve in June, with the offense continuing its solid performance.

Looking ahead to June, Fleetwood will face the NL West. This division has averaged 29 wins and 27 losses so far in 2006, but is led by two powerhouse teams (Metropolis at 37-19, Ocala at 36-20). We will soon find out how the rebuilt Fleetwood Walkers compare with these two proven BRASSball juggernauts.

May 29-31, 2006: Fleetwood at Brooklyn

May 29: Fleetwood 9, Brooklyn 1
This game was much closer than the score indicates, as Fleetwood blew it open late with 7 runs in the 9th inning. Highlighting the explosion was a 3-run double by David DeJesus, set up by some wild Brooklyn pitching (5 walks allowed in 9th inning alone).

Prior to that outburst, Javier Vazquez (6 IP, 10 K) and Kerry Wood (2 IP, 4 K) had pitched very well for the Bulldogs. Only a solo home run by Marcus Giles and an RBI double by David Wright in the 7th had marred their days.

Fleetwood's pitching was also strong. In fact, they did not allow an earned run all game. Esteban Loaiza (5 IP, 0 R, 7 K) led the staff, but the bullpen conributed 4 solid innings as well.

May 30: Fleetwood 5, Brooklyn 7
Brooklyn ended its losing ways versus Fleetwood, finally winning a game after 5 earlier loses. The Bulldogs took advantage of a shaky Dave Bush to score 5 runs in the first three innings. Fleetwood fought its way back, but fell just short. John Olerud starred at the plate for Brooklyn (4-5, 2B, HR, 2 RBI).

May 31: Fleetwood 4, Brooklyn 3 (11 innings)
Two lefties took the hill looking to deliver a series-win to their teams. Mark Buerhle started for Fleetwood and Jamie Moyer for Brooklyn. Both pitchers performed well, but this game would eventually be decided by the bullpens.

Neifi Perez broke a 1-1 tie in the 7th inning with a squeeze bunt, scoring David DeJesus. Michael Cuddyer delivered a solo home run in the bottom of the 7th, though, tying the game again.

Brooklyn took the lead in the bottom of the 8th on a Garrett Atkins RBI single. Moving to the top of the 9th, Fleetwood scratched a run across on a pinch-hit RBI single by Josh Phelps against Brooklyn closer Todd Jones. The game was headed to extra innings.

In the top of the 11th, Luis Matos singled in Marcus Giles. Fleetwood now led 4-3, and that's how the game would end after Scott Downs put down a Bulldog rally in the bottom of the inning.

Fleetwood wins the series 2 games to 1. Box scores are below.

May 28, 2006: Fighting Till the End

Fleetwood entered this game looking for a four-game sweep of Brooklyn. While always good news, this would be especially true after the Walkers' struggles versus Toledo (3-4) and Santa Barbara (2-5) earlier in May.

Things did not get off to a good start for Fleetwood, who trailed 3-0 after the top of the 4th inning. In the bottom of the 4th inning, though, Fleetwood scored 2 runs. A David Wright double highlighted that inning, and drew the Walkers within 1 run of the lead.

Both Brandon Webb of Brooklyn and A.J. Burnett of Fleetwood pitched well, and neither team scored again through the 7th inning. In the bottom of the 8th inning, however, Brooklyn called on Dewon Brazelton to relieve a tired Brandon Webb.

Needless to say, Brazelton had seen some troubles this season. And unfortunately for Bulldog fans, those struggles continued when he surrendered home runs to Derrek Lee and David Wright in the bottom of the 8th inning. The lead now belonged to Fleetwood, and Burnett would retire Brooklyn in order in the 9th inning.

Fleetwood had swept the four-game series, and would now head to Brooklyn for 3 more games versus the Bulldogs.

May 27, 2006: Shining Stars

Invariably, a team whose star players actually play like stars on that given day will win. And today saw Fleetwood's stars shine the brightest.

Derrek Lee, Jim Edmonds and Miguel Cabrera each hit solo home runs, and Greg Maddux provided 7 exceptional innings. Arthur Rhodes and Derrick Turnbow then came in finish what Maddux had started.

Fleetwood wins 3-2, and goes for a four-game sweep of Brooklyn tomorrow.

May 25, 2006: Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Bush

It's been a very up-and-down season so far for Fleetwood's Dave Bush. When he's on, he's on...mowing hitters down and throwing scoreless frame after scoreless frame. But when he's been off, he's been hammered hard. Real hard. This is a man living on the extremes.

Through the end of May (yes, we're using a bit of a crystal ball here and including his next two starts), here are his stats:
Record ERA GS IP H R ER HR BB SO
Overall 5-4 4.53 11 59.2 58 30 30 8 13 25
Good Bush 5-1 1.33 7 47.1 32 7 7 2 7 20
Bad Bush 0-3 16.78 4 12.1 26 23 23 6 6 5
Granted, most pitchers probably exhibit this type of split performance at some level. With that said, Bush seems to be turning it into an art form.

Getting back to the May 25 game, Fleetwood was fortunate to see the good side of Dave Bush on the mound. Specifically, Bush threw 8 innings and allowed just 6 hits and 1 run.

On the offensive side for the Walkers, the struggling Ryan Doumit surprised many with his best game of the season (2-4, 2B, 4 RBI).

All in all, Fleetwood would win its first game versus Brooklyn by a score of 7-2.

May 20-23, 2006: Fleetwood at Santa Barbara

May 20: Fleetwood 1, Santa Barbara 3
Mark Buehrle and Tomo Ohka battled each other in a classic pitchers' duel, with both pitchers throwing 7 scoreless innings to begin the game. When Carlos "El Caballo" Lee connected for a 3-run homer off Buehrle in the 8th inning, though, the game went to the Outlaws.

May 21: Fleetwood 5, Santa Barbara 6 (12 innings)
Santa Barbara knocked Greg Maddux out of the game in the 2nd inning, and led 5-3 heading into the 9th inning. Down to their last out, Fleetwood mounted a rally and scored twice (once on a Josh Phelps RBI single, again on a Ramon Castro RBI single). The game was tied and soon went to extra innings.

In the bottom of the 12th inning, Santa Barbara shortstop Juan Uribe led off with a double versus Cal Eldred. Adam Kennedy was up next, and promptly knocked Uribe in with an RBI single. Santa Barbara had earned its 4th win in 5 games versus the Walkers, and also handed Fleetwood its first extra-inning loss of the season (against 3 victories year-to-date).

May 22: Fleetwood 4, Santa Barbara 0
A.J. Burnett had all his pitches working, shutting out the Outlaws for 7 innings. Ryan Vogelsong and Scott Downs picked up where Burnett left off, combining for 2 more scoreless innings in relief. Meanwhile, David DeJesus went 4-4 with a home run (his 2nd of the season).

May 23: Fleetwood 4, Santa Barbara 7
After being held scoreless the day before, Santa Barbara's bats explode in the 1st inning. In total, the Outlaws score 4 runs in the opening inning against Fleetwood starter Esteban Loaiza. The Walkers would eventually pull within one run at 5-4, but Chad Tracy put the game away in the 7th inning with a 2-run homer off Fleetwood reliever Scott Downs.

Santa Barbara wins 3 of 4 games in the series, and takes 5 of 7 games from Fleetwood on the season. The Walkers slump continues, with the team now saddled with a 2-8 record in its last 10 games. Toledo and Santa Barbara had proven to be tough foes, indeed.

May 19, 2006: Salvaging a Series

Looking to avoid a sweep and end a season-long 5-game losing streak, Fleetwood sent out Dave Bush to face Santa Barbara's Tim Hudson.

Both pitchers were sharp early, throwing 3 scoreless innings apiece. In the bottom of the 4th inning, though, Fleetwood drew first blood. A two-run double by David Wright and an RBI single by David DeJesus gave Fleetwood a 3-0 lead.

Santa Barbara soon clawed back to within a run on a Nomar Garciaparra RBI double in the 5th inning and a Carlos Guillen solo homer to lead off the 6th inning.

Little did Santa Barbara know, but Guillen's homer would be its last base runner. Cal Eldred, Scott Downs, Arthur Rhodes and Derrick Turnbow combined to retire 12 consecutive batters and end the game. Final score: Fleetwood 3, Santa Barbara 2.

Fleetwood had salvaged the last game of the series, and ended its 5-game losing streak in the process. The Walkers would now head to Santa Barbara for 4 more games against the Outlaws.

May 18, 2006: Nomah!

Nomar Garciaparra, struggling through injuries in recent years, proved that he still has some juice left in his bat. He did damage early and late, hitting a solo home run in the 2nd inning (for Santa Barbara's first run) and delivering an RBI single in the 9th inning (for Santa Barbara's last–and game-winning–run).

Gustavo Chacin provided the Outlaws with a great start, allowing just one run through the first 8 innings. While he did tire out in the 9th inning (somehow surrendering a 3-run homer to Neifi Perez in the process), he and his teammates still held on for the win.

Having lost the first 2 games of the 3-game series, Fleetwood was now assured of losing its first home series of the year.

BOXSCORE: 2006 Santa Barbara Outlaws At 2006 Fleetwood Walkers 5/18/2006
Gm 2: Santa Barbara hits 3 home runs, and Chacin is sharp into the 9th inn.
