Making the Case: Conversing on Fleetwood's All-Stars

The arrival of July means two things. First, it means it's time to stock up on fireworks, sparklers, and hot dogs. And second, it also means it's time to vote for our annual BRASSball All-Stars.

At the risk of coming across as a shameless self-promoter (hey, Fleetwood DOES have the best record in the NL through 84 games), I thought I would use this blog to point out some of the most deserving players on my Fleetwood team. Hopefully you will keep these players in mind as you fill out your own ballots.

I've divided my team's nominees into two groups. The first grouping is the "Automatic" list, featuring players that definitely deserve your vote. The second grouping is the "Hidden Gem" list, featuring guys who won't jump off the ballot on you, but are still deserving (at least in my less-than-impartial mind).

THE AUTOMATICS

3B David Wright
.325 avg, 18 hr, 67 rbi, .391 obp, .560 slg, 8.5 runs created/27 outs

Simply put, Wright has had an amazing season. Through 84 games, he is among the National League's top 10 in batting average (7th), runs scored (10th), hits (7th), home runs (7th), and RBI (2nd). For the more sabermetrically-inclined, Wright ranks among the NL's top 10 in slugging percentage (5th), on-base percentage (7th), and runs created per 27 outs (4th).

OF Miguel Cabrera
318 avg, 15 hr, 53 rbi, .378 obp, .544 slg, 7.7 runs created/27 outs

In Fleetwood's otherwise dismal 2005 season, Cabrera provided a ray of hope with an amazing season (.308 avg, 44 hr, 125 rbi). He's now showing that his 2005 season was no fluke with another great season this year. He is among the NL's top 10 in batting average (10th), runs scored (6th), hits (6th), and doubles (2nd with 30). His rate stats are equally impressive, as he owns the NL's 9th best slugging percentage, 12th best on-base percentage, and 6th best in runs created per 27 outs. Finally, Cabrera also leads the NL in game-winning RBI with 12.

RHP A.J. Burnett
14 wins, 4 loses, 3.05 ERA, 121 ip, 9 hr, 47 bb, 104 k

Earning a decision in each of his 18 games started this season, Burnett has been Fleetwood's ace throughout the first 3 months of the season. His 14 wins are best in the league, and 3 more than his nearest competitor. His ERA is 5th best in the National League, and he is 6th in strikeouts. Sounds like a potential All-Star starting pitcher to me.

THE HIDDEN GEMS

C Ramon Castro
.318 avg, 10 hr, 38 rbi, .404 obp, .628 slg, 9.1 runs created per 27 outs

Along with Javier Valentin (.304, 9 hr, 22 rbi), Castro has formed perhaps the most potent catching tandem in BRASSball. Castro's counting stats are impressive, but his rate stats really tell his story. Although he doesn't have enough plate appearances to qualify (152 so far), his slugging and on-base percentages would be amongst the best in the National League. Given an otherwise less-than-inspiring group of NL catching candidates, Castro deserves your strong consideration.

OF Jim Edmonds
.241 avg, 22 hr, 52 rbi, .337 obp, .557 slg, 6.2 runs created per 27 outs

In a home park that is tough on left-handed hitters, Edmonds has more than held his own while also supplying Fleetwood's pitching staff with excellent defense. Edmonds is 3rd in the NL in home runs (22) and 13th in RBI (52). Meanwhile, his outfield defense is 3rd best in the NL (has converted 89% of x-chart chances into outs, behind only Vernon Wells and Ichiro). Given his power numbers, tough home park, and stellar defense, he is having a wonderful season indeed. Oh, and with 11 game-winning RBIs, he trails only Miguel Cabrera and Richie Sexson in the NL (both with 12).

Side note: We don't get to vote for relief pitchers, but Derrick Turnbow (3-2, 17 saves, 2.27 ERA) is also a deserving candidate. In his rookie season, he has consistently excelled and stabilized Fleetwood's bullpen.

That's it. Thanks for your consideration, and best of luck to all in the second half.

Fleetwood Stats through June (84 games)

Wow. Fleetwood finishes June with a sizzling 22-6 record (13-1 at home, 9-5 on road), leaving the Walkers one game ahead of Maine in the NL Central race with a 57-27 season record.

Fleetwood's offense had its best month of the season in June, scoring 190 runs (6.8 per game). Its pitching and defense was equally impressive, though, allowing only 73 runs (2.6 per game).

Given Fleetwood's total runs scored (503) and total runs allowed (323) on the season, its Pythagorean Record would be 59-25 (.708 x 84 games). As such, it appears the Walkers' record is slightly below would could be expected (-2 wins over expectations). This could be due to some large blow-out victories by Fleetwood in June.

Fleetwood continues to dominate right-handed starters (44-15, .746), and it improved its record versus lefty pitchers (from 5-9 through May to 13-12 through June).

Fleetwood's most exceptional players so far on the season are David Wright, Miguel Cabrera, A.J. Burnett and Esteban Loaiza. In the month of June, David Wright (.342/.430/.586), Jim Edmonds (.243/.342/.660), Mark Buehrle (4-2, 2.47 ERA), A.J. Burnett (6-1, 2.93 ERA) and Derrick Turnbow (0-0, 8 SV, 0.87 ERA) excelled.

Players who are struggling the most so far on the season are Marcus Giles, Jermaine Dye, and Greg Maddux. Jermaine Dye (.250/.320/.386 in June) and Derrek Lee (.229/.289/.483 in June) in particular had difficult months in June.

All in all, June was an amazing month for Fleetwood. The team went 6-1 versus the defending-champion Ocala Ocelots, 4-3 versus the Metropolis Avengers, and leads its division for the first time in years.

Looking ahead to July, Fleetwood will face the NL East. The teams in this division have averaged only 32 wins against 52 losses so far in 2006, making it the worst division in BRASSball. As such, the Walkers will need to have another strong month to keep pace with the impressive Maine Black Flies.

June 30, 2006: Bombs Away

With the season series tied 3 games apiece, today's game between the Metropolis Avengers and Fleetwood Walkers would determine who would take the season series. On the mound for Metropolis was Jason Schmidt while A.J. Burnett started for Fleetwood.

Burnett did not help his cause with an error and a run-scoring wild pitch in the 1st inning. Not only did the wild pitch score Brian Roberts, but it also put Bobby Abreu in scoring position for Vladimir Guerrero. "Vlad the Impaler" came through with an RBI single, and Metropolis led 2-0. The Avengers then loaded the bases on a Richie Sexson walk and Melvin Mora single, but Burnett retired Jorge Posada on a flyout to end the threat.

Fleetwood narrowed the lead to 2-1 with a Jim Edmonds home run in the 2nd inning. The homer was Edmonds' 13th in June and his 22nd of the season.

Burnett found himself in trouble again in the 3rd, with Metropolis loading the bases on 2 walks and a single. Burnett escaped again, though, by coaxing a groundball out from Rafael Furcal. Through three innings, Metropolis had scored 2 runs but had also stranded 8 runners.

Both Schmidt and Burnett settled in, and held the score at 2-1 through 5 innings. In the bottom of the 6th, however, Fleetwood's Derrek Lee and Miguel Cabrera hit back-to-back home runs. Fleetwood now led 3-2, and Metropolis removed Schmidt from the game in favor of its strong bullpen.

Having settled down from a shaky start, Burnett mowed down the Metropolis Avengers. From the top of the 4th inning through the top of the 7th, Burnett retired 12 straight batters. After giving up a lead-off single to Richie Sexson in the 8th, he retired Eric Chavez on a flyball to center field. Burnett then made way for the bullpen himself, as Fleetwood manager Rube Foster called on a fresh-armed Arthur Rhodes.

Rhodes surrendered a double to pinch-hitter Jason Michaels, putting the tying run on 2nd base with just 1 out. However, Rhodes quickly struck out Jorge Posada and Rafael Furcal to end the threat and Fleetwood held its 2-1 lead.

In the bottom of the 8th, Javier Valentin gave his team an insurance run by hitting a solo homer off Metropolis reliever Joaquin Benoit. The blast was Fleetwood's 4th home run of the day, combining with the other 3 solo homers to account for all of the team's scoring.

With Fleetwood's Derrick Turnbow having pitched three innings over the past two days, Fleetwood left Rhodes in to pitch the 9th. Rhodes was up to the challenge, retired Metropolis in order to end the game.

Fleetwood had swept all three home games versus Metropolis, and had won the season series 4 games to 3. Having also won 6 of 7 games from the Ocala Ocelots, Fleetwood has definitely proven that its playoff aspirations were for real.

June 29, 2006: The Wright Stuff

Today's matchup was a battle of veteran pitchers: Randy Johnson for Metropolis and Greg Maddux for Fleetwood. Both pitchers had one in their first starts of this series, and hoped to do so again today.

In the top of the 1st inning, Rafael Furcal led off with a single, stole second, and advanced to third on a Ramon Castro throwing error. Brian Roberts promptly drove Furcal home with a sacrifice fly, and Metropolis led 1-0.

Fleetwood answered with two runs in the bottom of the 2nd. These runs scored on a Marcus Giles walk and back-to-back doubles by Derrek Lee and Miguel Cabrera. The score remained 2-0 until the 4th inning, when the Walkers exploded for 4 runs on a 2-run double by Jim Edmonds and a 2-run homer by Jermaine Dye. Fleetwood now led 6-1.

The Walkers added another run to their lead when David Wright led off the 4th inning with a solo home run. The score was now 7-1, and remained that way until the 6th inning when Metropolis would rally its way back into the game.

With one out in the 6th, Brian Roberts and Bobby Abreu set the table with a single and walk. That brought Vladimir Guerrero to the plate with 2 runners on board. Guerrero did not disappoint the Metropolis faithful, quickly launching a 3-run homer into the outfield stands and chasing Maddux from the game in the process. The hit cut Fleetwood's lead to 7-4.

The Avengers would threaten again in the top of the 8th. Roberts and Abreu once again reached base via a single and a walk, but this time with nobody out. Vladimir Guerrero now came to the plate representing the tying run with the powerful Richie Sexson to follow.

With the game was on the line and two powerful right-handed batters scheduled to bat, Fleetwood manager Rube Foster called on Derrick Turnbow a bit earlier than usual. Foster undoubtedly hoped that Turnbow could at least get Fleetwood out of this jam, allowing the team to piece things together in the 9th inning if need be.

Throwing an array of fastballs and sliders, Turnbow retired Guerrero on a flyball to center field. Sexson did not fare any better, grounding out into an inning-ending 5-4-3 double play. Fleetwood had escaped without allowing a run.

The Walkers attempted to put the game away in their half of the 8th inning. Now facing Metropolis' Jason Isringhausen, Ramon Castro led off with a single, followed by a double from Bobby Crosby. David Dejesus then walked, and the bases were loaded with nobody out. Seeing that Isringhausen did not have his best stuff, Metropolis turned to Cliff Politte.

Marcus Giles had hit a grand slam the day before, and hoped to do the same here. Politte had other ideas, though, and coaxed Giles to hit a ground ball to shortstop Rafael Furcal. Furcal went home with his throw, retiring Castro on a force play, and Posada quickly gunned a throw to 1st base. The throw beat Giles, and Metropolis had turned a 6-2-3 double play. It appeared that the Avengers might escape the inning without any damage, and keep their small hope alive.

With 2 outs and runners on 2nd and 3rd, David Wright would not cooperate. He lined a Politte offering into the outfield for a 2-out, 2-run single. The big hit extended Fleetwood's lead to 9-4, and Turnbow held Metropolis scoreless in the 9th. The game was over, and Fleetwood had evened its season record against Metropolis to 3-3. Tomorrow's game would decide which team would win this season series.

June 28, 2006: Pedro vs. the Pen

Licking their wounds after losing 3 of 4 in Metropolis, Fleetwood returned home to face the Avengers for three more games.

Metropolis jumped out to a quick lead with a 3-run Vernon Wells homer in the 2nd. When the Avengers scored 3 more in the 3rd on a Richie Sexson homer, Esteban Loaiza's day was done. Heading into the bottom of the inning, Metropolis led 6-1 with Pedro Martinez on the mound.

Showing their tenacity, Fleetwood managed to coax 3 walks from a usually pinpoint Martinez in the 3rd. Marcus Giles quickly unloaded the bases with a grand slam home run (Fleetwood's first of the season), and the Walkers now trailed by just one run.

As Fleetwood relievers Scott Downs (2.1 innings, 0 runs) and Fernando Cabrera (2.1 innings, 0 runs) continued to keep Metropolis off the scoreboard, the Walkers showed their power once again. Derrek Lee connected for a 2-run homer off Martinez in the 5th, while Jermaine Dye hit a solo shot in the 6th. Fleetwood had not only erased the Metropolis lead, but now led 8-6.

Rube Foster called on Arthur Rhodes and Derrick Turnbow to pitch the 8th and 9th innings respectively, which they both did in scoreless fashion. In total, Fleetwood's bullpen had held the Avengers to just 2 hits and 1 walk in 6.2 total innings and outpitched Pedro Martinez in the process.

June 24-27, 2006: Fleetwood at Metropolis

June 24: Fleetwood 1, Metropolis 3
The opening game of this series featured two hot pitchers, Esteban Loazia for Fleetwood (winner of his previous 5 starts) and Randy Johnson for Metropolis (a winner in 5 of his last 6 decisions).

Both pitchers were sharp, throwing 3 scoreless innings each to begin the game. In the 4th, Fleetwood grabbed an early lead on a Miguel Cabrera solo home run.

Following a lead-off single by Rafael Furcal in the 6th, Fleetwood manager Rube Foster surprisingly lifted Esteban Loaiza in favor of Juan Dominguez. The move would indeed prove questionable, as Brian Roberts quickly greeted Dominguez with a 2-run blast. After retiring the next batter, Dominguez hit the showers in favor of Fernando Cabrera. Cabrera also surrendered a home run to his first batter faced (Vladimir Guerrero). Metropolis now led 3-1.

Meanwhile, Johnson continued to cruise for Metropolis until finally making way for Cliff Politte an Joaquin Benoit in the late innings. Both relievers pitched well, and Metropolis earned an opening-game victory.

June 25: Fleetwood 4, Metropolis 3
The second game of this four-game set featured Greg Maddux for Fleetwood and Jason Schmidt for Metropolis. Both pitchers have had their ups-and-downs in 2006, and would have their work cut out for them on this day.

Fleetwood grabbed an early lead by scoring 3 runs in the 3rd inning (including a 2-run homer from Derrek Lee) and another in the 4th (on an RBI double by Bobby Crosby). Meanwhile, Maddux held the Avengers scoreless through 4 innings.

In the 5th inning, Metropolis scored its first run on a Jorge Posada single. The Avengers then added two more runs in the 6th on a Guerrero single and an Eric Chavez sacrifice fly. Fleetwood's lead was now just 4-3.

While the lead was small, Fleetwood's bullpen was up to the challenge. Fernando Cabrera pitched 2.2 scoreless innings, followed by a scoreless inning from Derrick Turnbow in the 9th. Fleetwood had earned a tough road win.

June 26: Fleetwood 4, Metropolis 5
Fleetwood jumped out to an early lead, scoring twice in the 2nd inning on a Jim Edmonds home run (his 12th in June alone). The score would remain 2-0 until the 5th inning, when Metropolis would tie the game on an RBI double by Rafael Furcal and a sacrifice fly from Brian Roberts.

In the bottom of the 7th inning, Metropolis grabbed a commanding 3-run lead. Key to these runs was a 2-run single by Vladimir Guerrero, who batted with the bases loaded following an intentional walk to Bobby Abreu. An RBI groundout by Richie Sexson scored the 3rd run of the inning.

Metropolis entered the 9th with a seemingly insurmountable 5-2 lead, but Javier Valentin connected with a Michael Wuertz offering for a 2-run shot. Metropolis now led by just one run. With only 1 out, Marcus Giles then walked and Luis Matos added a single. The tying run was now on 3rd base and the go-ahead run on 1st.

Metropolis quickly summoned its closer, Jason Isringhausen. Even with Barry Bonds on his bench, Fleetwood manager Rube Foster stuck with Jermaine Dye in this key situation. Not only did Dye fail to come through with an RBI, but he grounded into a game-ending double play.

When questioned about his decision to not pinch-hit with Bonds in that key situation, Foster said he simply liked Dye's matchup better. "Isringhausen has been murder on left-handed batters all season," explained Foster. "I'm still confident in my choice...but sometimes your moves work, sometimes they don't. That's baseball."

Regardless, Metropolis had hung on by the skin of its teeth and earned its second win of the series.

June 27: Fleetwood 2, Metropolis 5
In a running theme, Fleetwood again grabbed an early lead. Barry Bonds hit a solo home run in the 2nd, and David Wright a solo blast in the 3rd. The Walkers led 2-0.

Fleetwood's lead would not last, as Metropolis scored multiple runs in the middle innings. After 6 full innings, Metropolis now led 3-2.

In the bottom of the 7th, the Avengers threatened once again with a lead-off single by Brian Roberts. With the top of the Metropolis lineup now scheduled, Fleetwood manager Rube Foster sensed the importance of the situation and called on his best reliever, Derrick Turnbow. Foster hoped Turnbow could keep his team within one run in this important game.

While a noble idea, the move did not work out. Turnbow walked Jason Michaels, putting runners at 1st and 2nd. Following a sacrifice bunt by Furcal, Richie Sexson hit a double that drove in both runners. Metropolis now led by a score of 5-2, which is how the game and series would end.

Metropolis wins the series 3 games to 1. Box scores are below.

June 16-18, 2006: Fleetwood at Ocala

June 16: Fleetwood 3, Ocala 4
The time had come for the up-start Fleetwood Walkers to prove themselves against the league's best. With 14 consecutive games against two National League powerhouses -- the defending champion Ocala Ocelots and the equally strong Metropolis Avengers -- the world would soon find out if the Fleetwood Walkers were for real.

Things did not begin well for Fleetwood in Game 1. Ocala designated hitter Rich Aurilia hit a 3-run homer in the 2nd inning, followed by a solo blast from Ocelot catcher Joe Mauer in the 3rd. Ocala now led 4-0.

Fleetwood made a valiant comeback attempt, scoring single runs in the 6th, 8th, and 9th innings. With 2 runners on and 2 outs, however, Fleetwood shortstop Neifi Perez would strike out against Ocala's Eddie Guardado to end the game.

June 17: Fleetwood 5, Ocala 3
The Ocelots proved why they were a champion the day before, and it appeared Fleetwood was in for another lesson today. Ocala jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, first on an RBI single from Larry Bigbie in the 4th and then on RBI hits from Grady Sizemore and Joe Mauer in the 5th. With Roy Oswalt on the mound for Ocala, things looked bleak for the Walkers.

However, Fleetwood shows its own grit, determination, and power in the 6th inning. First, Derrek Lee tied the game with a 3-run homer. Javier Valentin then followed two batters later with a solo home run, and Fleetwood took a 4-3 lead.

The Walkers added an insurance run in the 8th, and A.J. Burnett held the Ocelots to 3 runs through 7 innings. Fernando Cabrera and Derrick Turnbow relieved Burnett with 1 scoreless inning each, and Fleetwood earned a comeback win against the defending champions.

June 18: Fleetwood 18, Ocala 1
Empowered by their come-from-behind win the day before, Fleetwood came out on this day with all guns blazing. After a scoreless 1st inning, Fleetwood scored 17 runs over the next 4 innings, including 8 runs in the 4th. Among the many offensive stars for Fleetwood were David Dejesus (4-5, 2B, 3B), David Wright (4-7, 2B), Jim Edmonds (4-5, 3 HR), and Bobby Crosby (4-6, HR, 5 RBI).

Meanwhile, Mark Buehrle kept the Ocala Ocelot bats under control. In his 3rd consecutive complete-game victory, Buehrle allowed just 1 run on 5 hits while striking out a season-high 11 batters.

Fleetwood wins the series 2 games to 1. Box scores are below.

June 9-12, 2006: Fleetwood at North Georgia

June 9: Fleetwood 4, North Georgia 2
Esteban Loaiza and Paul Byrd faced off, with both pitchers performing well. Fleetwood managed to hit 3 home runs off Byrd, though, accounting for all 4 of the team's runs. A 2-run shot by Marcus Giles in the 6th was the game's crucial blow. Cal Eldred and Derrick Turnbow assisted Loaiza by throwing the last 3 inning, and Fleetwood earned a victory.

June 10: Fleetwood 15, North Georgia 2
Helped by two costly Yellow Jacket errors, Fleetwood erupted for 10 runs in the 2nd inning alone. A 3-run blast by Jim Edmonds capped this wild inning. Derrek Lee also had a big game, going 3-5 with a home run and 4 RBI.

On the mound, Mark Buehrle pitched a complete game for the Walkers, allowing just 2 runs on 7 hits in a blowout win.

June 11: Fleetwood 1, North Georgia 2
North Georgia's Andy Pettitte proved dominant on this day, striking out 11 batters in just 6.1 innings. A 2-run double from Mark Teahen provided Pettitte with all the support he would need, and Matt Belisle ended the game with 2.2 strong innings of his own. Although the Yellow Jackets had scored just 2 runs for its 3rd straight game, it was enough today.

June 12: Fleetwood 6, North Georgia 4
A.J. Burnett and Doug Davis each began the game with 5 scoreless innings. Fleetwood broke through with 1 run in the 6th and 2 runs in the 7th. Jeff Kent hit a 2-run homer in the bottom of the 7th inning, though, and North Georgia now trailed by just 1 run.

The Walkers responded with 2 more runs in the 8th, and another run in the 9th on a Miguel Cabrera home run. Entering the bottom of the 9th with a 4-run lead, the game appeared safe at hand. While a 2-run blast by Mark Teixeira made things interesting in the 9th, the Fleetwood lead did hold up.

Fleetwood wins the series 3 games to 1. Box scores are below.
