Fleetwood Stats through September (162 games)

With an amazing 21-game winning streak to end the season, the Fleetwood Walkers finish September with a dominating 21-1 record (10-1 at home, 11-0 on road) and the season with a league-best 117-45 record. This incredible finish not only led the Walkers to their first-ever NL Central championship, but also home-field advantage in the 2006 BRASSball playoffs.

Not surprisingly both Fleetwood's offense and its pitching & defense dominated in September. On offense, Fleetwood scored 167 runs (7.6 per game; Fleetwood's season average = 6.2 per game). On defense, its pitching and defense allowed only 63 runs (2.9 per game; Fleetwood's season average = 3.7 per game).

Given Fleetwood's total runs scored (1000 even) and total runs allowed (593) on the season, its Pythagorean Record would be 120-42 (.740 x 162 games). As such, it appears the Walkers' record remains slightly below what might be expected (-3 wins versus expected record). As was true throughout the season, this is likely due to some large blow-out victories by Fleetwood over the course of the summer.

Fleetwood's season-long dominance versus right-handed starters continued (81-27, .750), while it also continued its month-to-month improvement versus left-handed pitchers (5-9 through May; 13-12 through June; 24-17 through July; 26-18 through August; 36-18 through September).

Fleetwood's most exceptional players on the season were Miguel Cabrera, Derrek Lee, A.J. Burnett and Esteban Loaiza. In the month of September only, Derrek Lee (.380/.448/.837), Miguel Cabrera (.345/.424/.713), Ryan Zimmerman (.491/.547/.860), David Wright (.333/.412/.750), Esteban Loaiza (4-0, 1.93 ERA), Greg Maddux (4-0, 2.32 ERA), Mark Buehrle (4-0, , 3.09 ERA), and Kelvim Escobar (1-0, 11.2 IP, 0.00 ERA, 14 K) all excelled.

In a testament to Fleetwood's excellent season, very few of its players had disappointing seasons. Marcus Giles (.274/.342/.447) rebounded after a slow start. Ryan Doumit had a strong September, but struggled in a part-time roll (.217/.275/.326). Jose Guillen provided strong defense after his mid-season arrival, but struggled at the plate (.204/.263/.296). In September only, Ramon Castro (.200/.364/.240), A.J. Burnett (3-0, 5.24 ERA), and David Bush (2-0, 6.75 ERA) all had difficult months.

All in all, the 2006 regular season was an amazing success for Fleetwood. After multiple rebuilding seasons, the team earned its first divisional crown and earned home-field advantage during the playoffs.

Looking ahead to October, Fleetwood will host the NL East champion Glen Allen Mets (77-85) in a National League Divisional Series matchup. In the regular season, Fleetwood won 5 of 7 games versus the Mets.

September 24, 2006: "21"

Ryan Zimmerman hit 2 doubles and had 2 RBI as the seemingly unstoppable Fleetwood Walkers defeated the Maine Black Flies by the score of 3 to 1 at John Locke Field. With the win, Fleetwood ends the 2006 BRASSball regular season with a shocking 21-game winning streak.

Fleetwood went ahead for good in the bottom of the 5th inning by scoring one runner. First, Bobby Crosby drew a walk. Luis Matos had a chance to keep things going, but he went down on strikes. Zimmerman then doubled scoring the run. Rookie Derrick Turnbow was perfect in the ninth giving him 27 saves on the season.

Esteban Loaiza (20-5) was the winner allowing 1 run in 6 innings. C.C. Sabathia (11-8) suffered the loss. "I always am most impressed when a pitcher finds a way to win even without his best stuff," Rube Foster said after the game. "Loaiza did not have command of his pitches most of the afternoon, but he proved he really knew how to pitch!"

September 22, 2006: The Mighty Miguel

Entering its last regular-season homestand, Fleetwood looked to extend it 19-game winning steak. Doing so would not be easy, though, as the team faced the playoff-bound Maine Black Flies. Both teams sent their aces to the mound: lefty Johan Santana for Maine and righty A.J. Burnett for Fleetwood.

Things looked good early for the Walkers. They scored two quick runs in the 1st, highlighted by a Miguel Cabrera solo home run. Maine rebounded in a big way, though, scoring once in the 2nd, twice in the 3rd, and once more in the 4th. The Black Flies now led 4-2 heading into the bottom of the 4th.

Facing a two-run deficit, Cabrera once again came though for Fleetwood. He hit his second homer of the game versus Santana -- his 34th home run of the season -- and pulled his team within one run.

In the top of the 7th, Maine's Ruben Gotay led off with a single. Alex Gonzalez followed with a double, and the Black Flies had 2 runners in scoring position with nobody out. In a bind, Fleetwood manager Rube Foster called on Arthur Rhodes. Rhodes continued his amazing season, retiring the next three batters in order without allowing an inherited runner to score.

In the bottom of the 7th, Fleetwood mounted a rally of its own. After one out, Bobby Crosby hit a double. With the tying run on second, Maine relieved Santana with stud reliever Kyle Farnsworth. Fleetwood's David DeJesus was not intimidated, though, driving a Farnsworth fastball into the outfield for an RBI single. After 7 inning, the game was tied 4-4.

Both bullpens pitched scoreless innings in the 8th and 9th innings. In the top of the 10th, Fleetwood mid-season pickup Kelvim Escobar pitched a scoreless inning. In the bottom of the frame, Fleetwood rookie Ryan Zimmerman continued his sizzling September with a lead-off double. After a Luis Matos sacrifice bunt, Maine brought in Ryan Dempster to relieve Farnsworth. It did not matter to Fleetwood's Derrek Lee, who hit a walk-off single to end the game.

Fleetwood had completed the comeback win, and extended its dazzling winning streak to 20 games.

September 18-21, 2006: Fleetwood at Maine

September 18: Fleetwood 13, Maine 4
Fleetwood's hitters hit 2-run homers in the 3rd (David Wright), the 4th (Jose Guillen), and the 5th (Javier Valentin), giving starter A.J. Burnett all the offensive support he would need.

Maine cuts the lead to 6-4 with four runs in the 7th inning, but the Walkers add one insurance run in the 8th and a whopping 6 more in the 9th. Highlighting the 9th inning barrage was Bobby Crosby with a 2-run triple.

Jose Guillen went 4-5 with 4 RBI, while A.J. Burnett earned his league-leading 24th win of the season. Add it all up, and Fleetwood's winning streak had now hit 15 games.

September 19: Fleetwood 8, Maine 1
The Walkers jumped on opposing pitcher C.C. Sabathia for 3 homers (Miguel Cabrera, Bobby Crosby, Luis Matos), and Fleetwood cruised to an easy win.

Ryan Zimmerman and Derrek Lee each collected 2 doubles on the day, and Mark Buehrle earned his 18th win of the season. Fleetwood's amazing winning streak was now up to 16 games.

September 20: Fleetwood 2, Maine 1
The red-hot Walkers struggled to score on this day, reaching home plate just twice against Maine starter Chien-Ming Wang. Luckily for Fleetwood and its manager Rube Foster, though, Esteban Loaiza was even better.

Loaiza hurled seven shutout innings, allowing just 4 hits and 2 walks. Rookie Fernando Cabrera pitched the final 2 frames for the save. The Walkers had earned their 17th straight win.

September 21: Fleetwood 9, Maine 2
Fleetwood fell behind 1-0 after the 1st inning, but scored twice in the 2nd on a Javier Valentin homer and a David DeJesus bases-loaded walk. The Walkers never looked back, adding 7 more runs on the way to the team's 18th straight victory.

Greg Maddux excelled on the mound, throwing 7 innings and allowing only 1 run. Valentin ended the day 3 for 4 with a 2B and a HR. Jim Edmonds also hit a homer, his 37th of the season.

September 14-16, 2006: Fleetwood at Cincinnati

September 14: Fleetwood 9, Cincinnati 3
Derrek Lee clubs three home runs -- a two-run shot in the 1st, another two-run blast in the 3rd, and a solo homer in the 8th -- and Fleetwood never looks back.

Javier Valentin, Marcus Giles, and Jose Guillen also hit homers in the win. Mark Buehrle benefits from the offensive barrage, earning another victory. Fleetwood's bullpen gives up its first run in 34.2 innings, but the team's winning streak hits 12 games.

September 15: Fleetwood 5, Bloomington 4
Fleetwood is down 4-3 in the top of the 9th, and the team's winning streak seems over. Ryan Zimmerman comes through with a game-tying double, however, and Derrek Lee gives Fleetwood the lead two batters later with another double.

Scott Downs pitches the final two innings for the win, and Fleetwood wins its 13th consecutive game.

September 16: Fleetwood 6, Bloomington 3
David Wright hits two home runs and drives in four runs, leading Fleetwood to victory in a close game. The Walkers enjoyed a small lead of 4-3 in the 9th until Wright's 2-run blast provided much-needed insurance.

Greg Maddux earned the win with 5 innings before turning the game over to his stellar bullpen. Juan Dominguez earned just his 2nd save of the season in the process. Fleetwood's winning streak extends to 14 games.

September 13, 2006: A Scoreless Streak to Remember

Fleetwood was red hot, entering today's game with a 10-game winning streak. After just 1 inning, though, it did not look good for number 11.

Dave Bush, in the midst of a very strong season, did not bring his "A" game to the mound on this day. In fact, he barely escaped the first inning when he allowed a grand slam to Carl Everett and a 5th run on a Javier Lopez single. Bush would pitch one more inning before departing.

Fleetwood regained one run in the bottom of the first on a Jose Guillen single. In the 4th, the Walkers scored two more. And in the 5th, they scored another. Suddenly Fleetwood trailed by just 1 run through 5 innings.

In the 7th inning, the Walkers completed their comeback. Bobby Crosby launched a solo homer to lead off the inning, and the game was knotted 5-5. Two scoreless innings followed, and the game headed to extra innings.

Fleetwood's bullpen continued its amazing streak, throwing two more scoreless innings in the 10th and 11th. With 9 shutout innings on this day, the team's relief pitchers had run their scoreless streak to a mind-boggling 34.1 innings.

David Wright finally ended the game in the 11th inning, collecting his fourth hit of the game to drive in the winning run. Fleetwood had come from behind, it had swept the Cincinnati Royals, and it had run its winning streak to 11 games.

September 12, 2006: The Pen Is Mightier Than the Sword

Both teams jumped out of the gates early in this one. First, Matt Stairs greeted Fleetwood pitcher Greg Maddux rudely with a 3-run homer in the 1st. Not to be outdone, the Walkers quickly scored 3 runs on Royals starting pitcher Matt Clement. After 1 inning, the game was tied 3-3.

Suddenly, both Maddux and Clement settled in. Both pitched strongly the reminder of the game. Clement would pitch 7 total innings, allowing just two more Fleetwood runs. Maddux would throw 6 innings, allowing just one more Cincinnati run. After 6 innings, the Walkers led 5-4.

Once again, Fleetwood turned to its bullpen. And once again, the team's relief pitchers were up to the challenge. They threw 3 scoreless innings, running their scoreless streak to 25.1 innings. (The last run allowed: Derrick Turnbow's blown save on September 1.) Turnbow was sharp on this day, though, throwing the final 1.1 innings for the save. Greg Maddux earned the win.
