Fleetwood Stats through July (112 games)

Fleetwood finished July with a strong 20-8 record (11-3 at home, 9-5 on road), keeping the Walkers one game ahead of Maine in the NL Central race with a 77-35 season record.

Fleetwood's offense had another stellar month in July, scoring 180 runs (6.4 per game). Its pitching and defense faded after an incredible June but were still strong, allowing only 105 runs (3.8 per game).

Given Fleetwood's total runs scored (683) and total runs allowed (428) on the season, its Pythagorean Record would be 80-32 (.718 x 112 games). As such, it appears the Walkers' record remains slightly below what might be expected (-3 wins versus expectations). Again, this is likely due to some large blow-out victories by Fleetwood during its 2006 campaign.

Fleetwood continues to dominate right-handed starters (53-18, .746), while also steadily improving its record versus lefty pitchers (from 5-9 through May to 13-12 through June to 24-17 through July).

Fleetwood's most exceptional players so far on the season are Miguel Cabrera, David Wright, A.J. Burnett and Esteban Loaiza. In the month of July, Jermaine Dye (.444/.495/.778), Miguel Cabrera (.343/.423/.657), Jim Edmonds (.300/.432/.678), Greg Maddux (4-1, 1.99 ERA), A.J. Burnett (4-1, 3.29 ERA), Esteban Loaiza (3-2, 3.28 ERA) and Scott Downs (0-0, 22.2 IP, 1.19 ERA) all excelled.

Players who have struggled the most during the season are Marcus Giles, Neifi Perez, and Mark Buehrle. Luis Matos (.222/.283/.241 in July), Ryan Doumit (.224/.267/..294 in July), Neifi Perez (.243/.282/.297 in July), and Mark Buehrle (3-2, 5.79 ERA in July) in particular had difficult months in July.

All in all, July was an another successful month for Fleetwood. Although it did not put any distance between itself and Maine, the team continues to lead its division after years of inaptitude.

Looking ahead to August, Fleetwood will face the tough AL Central. The teams in this division have averaged 67 wins against just 45 losses so far in 2006, making it the strongest division in BRASSball. As such, the Walkers will need to have another strong month to keep pace with the persistent and talented Maine Black Flies.

July 28-31, 2006: Fleetwood at Port Richey

July 28: Fleetwood 9, Port Richey 1
After losing 2 of 3 to Port Richey at home -- and after losing this game 1-0 after 4 innings -- a frustrated Fleetwood team explodes for 5 runs in the 5th inning and 4 more in the 9th inning. Leading the charge was Jermaine Dye, who continued his torrid July by going 2-4 with a grand slam.

Meanwhile, Esteban Loaiza pitched 7 strong innings for the victory. He allowed only one unearned run on 5 hits and 0 walks. Ryan Vogelsong managed to close out the game for his first save of the season.

July 29: Fleetwood 0, Port Richey 3
Through the first 109 games of the season, Fleetwood had yet to be shut out. Somebody forgot to tell that to Joe Kennedy, though, as he blanked the Walkers for 7 complete innings. When Port Richey's Scott Linebrink added two more shutout frames, the deed was done.

A.J. Burnett pitched well for Fleetwood (7 IP, 3 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 4 K), but suffered his 5th loss of the season just the same. (This after suffering his first no-decision of the year against the Everglades on July 25.)

Chris Duffy starred at the plate for Port Richey, going 2-3 with a rare home run.

July 30: Fleetwood 5, Port Richey 0
Victims of a shutout the day before, Fletewood turned the tables on the Everglades with a shutout of its own. Greg Maddux was the man who held Port Richey in check for most of the day, allowing just 3 hits and 0 walks in 7 innings. Scott Downs pitched the final two innings to complete the three-hit shutout.

Miguel Cabrera (2-5, 3B, 2 RBI), David Wright (2-5, RBI) and Bobby Crosby (2-2, 3B, HR, 2 BB) provided Maddux and Downs with all the offense the pitchers would need and more.

July 30: Fleetwood 20, Port Richey 2
Sluggish at many times during the home-and-home series versus Port Richey, Fleetwood exploded against Dave Williams for 20 runs, 19 hits, and 5 home runs. (Obviously, Williams must have done something to upset his manager to deserve such a whipping.)

Many players shined bright for the Walkers on this day but none more so than shortstop Bobby Crosby. After grounding into a double play in Fleetwood's 9-run 1st inning, Crosby eventually hit for the cycle. He collected a 2-run triple in the 2nd inning, a single in the 4th inning, a 3-run homer in the 7th inning, and a double in the 9th inning. In total, Crosby went 4-6 wih 5 RBI.

David Bush benefited from the run explosion, pitching 7 innings of 2-run baseball. Scott Downs once again completed the game with two more scoreless innings, and Fleetwood took the series 3 games to 1.

July 27, 2006: Hammered

Fleetwood never stood a chance. Port Richey hammered Fleetwood starting pitcher Mark Buehrle, knocking him out after 8 hits in just 1.2 innings.

With the score 6-1 in favor of the Everglades after 2 innings, Port Richey added 4 more runs throughout the game. Meanwhile, Port Richey ace Jose Contreras shut down Fleetwood's bats, giving up just a solo home run to Derrek Lee in 7 innings of work. Final score: Port Richey 10, Fleetwood 1.

With this defeat, Fleetwood had lost its first home series in over 2 months (May 17-19 versus Santa Barbara). Rube Foster hoped his team would regain its winning form during a four-game road trip to Port Richey.

July 26, 2006: Karma Chameleon

In a stunning reverse of the previous game's conclusion, Fleetwood had a victory in its fingers before letting slip away like yesterday's Top 40 hit.

Heading into the 9th inning, the Walkers held a 5-2 lead over Port Richey. Greg Maddux had provided the team with a great start (7.2 IP, 2 H, 2 R), and Miguel Cabrera had driven in 3 runs on 2 hits and a walk. In other words, things looked good.

When Cabrera commited a 2-base error on a Jorge Cantu grounder to lead off the 9th, though, it marked a turning point. Chris Shelton followed with a walk, bring the tying run to the plate for the Everglades. Following a groundout by Jack Wilson, Chris Duffy collected a base hit off Fleetwood closer Derrick Turnbow. One run scored, and the tying run was now on first base.

Vinny Castilla was up next, and hit a slow roller in front of home plate. Ryan Doumit forced a tough throw to 1st base, giving Castilla not only a single but also advancing him to second base on the error. A second run scored, the tying run was on third base, and the go-ahead runner on second. When Turnbow walked Bengie Molina to load the bases, his day was done.

Arthur Rhodes came in, quickly retiring Juan Encarnacion on an RBI groundout. A run had scored, though, tying the game 5-5. When Jose Cruz Jr. followed with a 2-out RBI single, Port Richey had grabbed a sudden lead.

In the bottom of the 9th inning, Fleetwood needed one run to force extra innings. Following a strikeout of pinch-hitter Barry Bonds, pinch-hitter Jermaine Dye hit a double. The tying run was now on second base.

With Bobby Crosby at the plate, Dye suddenly took off for third base. Former Fleetwood Walker Bengie Molina's throw was on target, and Dye was thrown out. Suddenly things looked bleak for the Walkers. Crosby did manage to draw a walk, but pinch-hitter Josh Phelps struck out versus Scott Linebrink. The game was over, and Port Richey had completed its comeback.

As Fleetwood fights tooth-and-nail with Maine for a division title, it may look back on this game as a very costly loss. Unlike the good fortune of the day before, perhaps karma had simply evened the slate.

July 25, 2006: An Indecisive A.J.

Through 22 starts, A.J. Burnett's record stood at 18-4. In other words, he had earned a decision in every start...usually a good one, occasionally not, but always something definitive.

Knocked from the opener versus Port Richey in the 6th inning, it looked like Burnett would suffer his 5th loss of the season. All in all, he gave up 6 runs in 5.2 innings to the Everglades including a 2-run triple by (off all people) Bengie Molina. That hit sent Molina to the oxygen tank and Burnett to the showers.

Luckily for A.J., though, his teammates rarely go down without a fight. Down 6-3 entering the 8th, Bobby Crosby collected a base hit to drive in Fleetwood's first run of the inning. When Marcus Giles followed two batters later with a 2-run single of his own, Fleetwood had tied the game and taken Burnett off the hook for his first no-decision of the season.

After Fleetwood reliever Arthur Rhodes pitched a scoreless top of the 9th, Miguel Cabrera quickly ended the game with a walk-off home run to lead off the bottom of the inning. The game was over, and the Walkers had earned a comeback victory. Final score: Port Richey 6, Fleetwood 7.

July 21-23, 2006: Fleetwood at Glen Allen

July 21: Fleetwood 10, Glen Allen 5
Fleetwood's offense explodes for 10 runs, including 4 home runs. Miguel Cabrera (3-5, 2 HR, 4 RBI) led the charge, while Derrek Lee (3-4, HR, 2 RBI) and Jim Edmonds (1-3, HR, 3 RBI) also chipped in.

David Bush benefited from the run support and picked up the victory. Scott Downs relieved Bush after 7 innings, pitching two scoreless frames to end the game.

July 22: Fleetwood 4, Glen Allen 11
In a mirror image of the first game, Glen Allen pounded Fleetwood for 11 runs. Just as Fleetwood had done the day before, the Mets also hit 4 home runs...including 2 from its young star. Albert Pujols (3-4, 2B, 2 HR) was up to his usual tricks, while Jason Ellison (2-3, HR, 3 RBI) and Jose Molina (2-3, HR, 2 RBI) showed surprising power.

Mark Buehrle's sluggish season continued, as he allowed 7 runs and 3 homers in just 2.2 innings pitched.

July 23: Fleetwood 5, Glen Allen 2
Esteban Loaiza and Chris Carpenter dueled in a rematch of their July 18 tilt at Fleetwood, a game in which a late Walkers comeback attempt had fallen just short. Both pitchers were on top of their games, although Loaiza's great effort (7 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 7 K) could not quite match Carpenter's exceptional one (8 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 12 K).

Loaiza gave way to Juan Dominguez in the 8th inning, but Dominguez's season-long struggle with the long-ball continued. Sean Casey hit a solo home run, extending Glen Allen's lead to 2-0 entering the 9th inning.

The Mets turned to lefty Mike Gonzalez to pitch the 9th inning. Gonzalez has had his struggles in 2006, and Fleetwood hoped to capitalize. And capitalize they did.

After lead-off walks to both Miguel Cabrera and Jim Edmonds, Ryan Doumit hit a one-out double to score a run. With first base open and looking for a double-play, Gonzalez walked Josh Phelps intentionally to load the bases.

Crosby, a lefty-killer all season, came through for Fleetwood with an RBI single. The game was now tied. After a Marcus Giles strikeout, Gonzalez gave up another hit...this time to David DeJesus. This two-out hit plated two more runners, and Fleetwood had grabbed a sudden 2-run lead. Gonzalez struck out the side by retiring Derrek Lee, but the damage was done.

Arthur Rhodes, who had come in for Dominguez to pitch a scoreless 8th, remained in the game for the 9th and retired Glen Allen in order to end the game. Fleetwood had successfully completed this day's comeback, and thus won 2 of 3 games at Glen Allen and 5 of 7 on the season.

July 19, 2006: A.J. = A "W"

A.J. Burnett once again justified his huge off-season contract, providing Fleetwood with a great start versus Glen Allen.

Working into the 7th inning, Burnett allowed just 2 hits and 4 walks before giving way to Fleetwood's bullpen. Juan Dominguez and Ryan Vogelsong then followed with 2.2 scoreless innings and combined with Burnett on a 3-hit win for Fleetwood.

Starring at the plate for the Walkers were Jermaine Dye and Marcus Giles, both of whom hit home runs. Giles' shot knocked out Glen Allen starting pitcher Barry Zito in just the 2nd inning, while Dye's homer added to his sizzling July performance.

July 18, 2006: Whittling Away

With two of the National League's best starting pitchers facing off, this game was sure to be an exciting matchup. And exciting it was, filled with both great pitching as well as explosive batting.

Both pitchers, Chris Carpenter for Glen Allen and Esteban Loaiza for Fleetwood, started the game with 4 scoreless innings apiece. After an Albert Pujols groundout to begin the 5th, however, seven consecutive Glen Allen Mets suddenly reached base against a previously strong Loaiza. By the time Fleetwood reliever Scott Downs coaxed a double-play groundout from Sean Casey to end the onslaught, the Mets had scored 5 runs. Key among the hits was a 2-run homer by Morgan Ensberg.

Pujols added another run to Glen Allen's total with a solo shot to lead off the 6th inning. Fleetwood quickly responded with 2 runs in the bottom of the 6th thanks to back-to-back-to-back doubles by Jim Edmonds, Marcus Giles and Ryan Doumit. The score was now 6-2 in favor of Glen Allen.

Fleetwood climbed even closer in the 7th inning thanks to a 2-run homer by Jim Edmonds. Once down 5 runs to one of the league's best pitchers, the Walkers now trailed by just 2 runs.

The score remained 6-4 in favor of Glen Allen entering the bottom of the 9th. Facing left-handed reliever Mike Gonzalez, Luis Matos reached base on a hit-by-pitch. Miguel Cabrera then struck out, but Edmonds continued his strong game with a double. The tying run was now in scoring position at second base.

Gonzalez next faced Marcus Giles, who drew a walk to load the bases. After Fleetwood manager Rube Foster called on Ramon Castro to pinch-hit for Ryan Doumit, Glen Allen replaced Gonzalez with righty Roberto Hernandez.

Needing a strikeout or pop fly, Hernandez earned just that with a swinging third strike to Castro. Derrek Lee stepped up next, but was also hit by a pitch. That loaded the bases for Bobby Crosby. However, like Castro before him, Crosby could not put a ball into play versus Hernandez and struck out.

The game was over, and Glen Allen had held off Fleetwood's valiant comeback attempt. In total, the Mets had struck out 15 batters in the course of its victory including 11 by Carpenter.
