June 7, 2006: Turning It Up to Eleven

Sometimes you're the windshield. Sometimes you're the bug. And on this day, Charm City most definitely put forth a hemipterous performance.

Oh, things certainly started well enough for the Dragoons. In fact, they held a 2-0 lead after 4 innings. But saying it went downhill from there is, well...a bit like saying that General Custer once had a bad day at the Little Big Horn River.

First, Fleetwood plated 5 runs in the bottom of the 5th inning. That's normally a pretty impressive feat. But then things REALLY got interesting for the Walkers in the bottom of the 6th. To wit:

*** BOTTOM OF INNING 6 ***
0 J.Dye 0 Single b-1
0 1 N.Perez 0 Single 1-3 b-1
0 1 3 0 Stolen Base 1-2
0 23 D.Dejesus 0 Walk b-1
SUBSTITUTE P - Chad Harville
0 123 D.Wright 0 Walk 3-H 2-3 1-2 b-1
0 123 D.Lee 0 Strike Out b-0
1 123 M.Cabrera 0 Single 3-H 2-3 1-2 b-1
1 123 J.Valentin 0 Strike Out b-0
2 123 M.Giles 0 Double 3-H 2-H 1-3 b-2

SUBSTITUTE P - Matt Ginter
2 23 J.Edmonds 0 Single 3-H 2-H b-1
2 1 J.Dye 0 Single 1-3 b-1
2 1 3 N.Perez 0 Single 3-H 1-3 b-1
2 1 3 D.Dejesus 0 Single 3-H 1-2 b-1
2 12 D.Wright 0 Home Run 2-H 1-H b-H
2 D.Lee 0 Single b-1
2 1 M.Cabrera 0 Ground Out b-0

Add it all up and that's 2 walks, 8 singles, 1 double, and 1 home run. The net result: 11 runs, 4 of which were driven in by David Wright alone. Now that's the type of performance that even Nigel Tufnel can appreciate.

Needless to say, these two innings proved to be a turning point in the game. Charm City was unable to come back, and Fleetwood won the game (18-2) and the series (3 games to 1).

Fleetwood's next homestand will be a 3-game series versus the North Georgia Yellow Jackets.
