Heading into the 9th inning, the Bulldogs held a 4-3 lead. When Darin Erstad added to that lead with a 2-out, 2-run homer off Fleetwood's Heath Bell, the game seemed as good as over.
The Walkers would not go quietly, though. Nick Markakis led off with a single. David Wright then struck out, but Carlos Pena brought the tying run to the plate with a single of his own. Brooklyn manager Robert Smith turned to the venerable Mariano Rivera to bail his team out.
Miguel Cabrera was Rivera's first foe, and he came through for the hometown fans with an RBI single. Learning from earlier mistakes this season, Fleetwood manager Rube Foster pinch ran for Cabrera with Jason Bartlett. When Chris Iannetta smashed a double down the left field line, the decision paid off as Bartlett scored easily from first to tie the game 6-6!At this point, it became a battle of bullpens...and a battle of attrition. Fleetwood's Hong-Chih Kuo relieved Bell, and ended up pitching 2.2 innings of perfect baseball. For Brooklyn, Rivera pitched a perfect 10th inning before giving way to Jesus Colome. Colome picked up where Rivera left off, pitching two scoreless innings of his own.
The game moved to the 13th inning, still knotted 6-6. Fleetwood brought in righty Jose Veras, its fourth pitcher of the game. After Veras pitched a perfect inning, Brooklyn brought in its FIFTH pitcher in the form of lefty Joe Beimel. Biemel pitched a scoreless inning himself, sending the game to a 14th inning.
Veras came through again for Fleetwood's fans, striking out the side. Having fanned the last two batters the inning before, he had struck out 5 consecutive Brooklyn batters. In the bottom of the 14th frame, Biemel retired the lead-off batter before hitting Howie Kendrick -- 3 for 6 with 2 doubles on the day -- with a pitch. Rafael Furcal followed with a single, putting the winning run at second base.Markakis came up next, but managed only a flyball out. David Wright -- 0 for 7 on the day thus far -- would bat next. He hit a hard ground ball that snuck past Brooklyn third baseman Garrett Atkins. Kendrick motored around third base, and scored the winning run. Fleetwood had won 7-6 in 14 hard-fought innings, sending the remaining hometown fans home happy if tired.

Second baseman Howie Kendrick hit 2 doubles as the Fleetwood Walkers topped
the Brooklyn Bulldogs in 14 innings by a score of 7 to 6 at John Locke
Field.
Both teams were tied at 6 runs apiece after nine innings. Fleetwood came out
the victor in the 14th inning. After an out was recorded, Kendrick was hit
by a pitch. Rafael Furcal came to the plate and lashed a single. One out
later, David Wright stepped in and he slapped a base-hit making Fleetwood the
winners and sending the 29,929 fans home happy. Fleetwood ended up with 14
hits for the game while Brooklyn had 8.
Jose Veras(1-1) was the winner allowing no runs in 2 innings. Joe Beimel(0-3)
was tagged with the loss in relief. He gave up 1 run in 1 and 2/3 innings
and saw his ERA jump from 1.54 to 2.03.
