April 4, 2006: Don't Call It a Comeback

Fleetwood has indeed been here for years, but comebacks have been few and far between lately. (Back-to-back seasons with 49-113 and 60-102 records will cause that type of drought.) Still, Fleetwood's April 2 comeback from a 2-0 deficit (albeit after just 3 innings) was a nice little reward.

Well, today's effort would need to be stronger. With a barrage of singles and doubles, Tinley jumped on Esteban Loaiza for a 5-2 lead through 6 innings. Would Fleetwood be able to mount a more impressive comeback and win their opening series of the year? More importantly, could the Walkers battle back and set a positive tone for the rest of season?

In the bottom of the 7th, two quick walks and a single (against only one out) was a good start. Jim Edmonds then hit a deep sacrifice fly, shrinking the lead to 5-3. Getting closer.

Derrek Lee, still hitless on the year (0-13) was up next. Before Lee could put a ball in play, though, Tinley reliever Russ Springer uncorked a wild pitch. That plated another run, making it a 5-4 ballgame. And perhaps it also took some presure off of Lee, who followed with a run-scoring single. The game was now tied.

Two walks later, David Wright came up against Claudio Vargas and hit a based-loaded triple (this after touching Vargas for a home run just two days earlier). That gave Fleetwood a 8-5 lead, which is how the game would eventually end.

Congratulations on a great game, Mr. Wright. And nice job yourself, Mr. Lee...they say the first hit is the hardest.
