April 11, 2006: David vs. David

Today's matchup featured one old David (Wells) versus one young one (Bush).

Fleetwood jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead, scoring one run in the 1st inning (on a Jim Edmonds solo homer) and two runs in the 2nd inning (on a David DeJesus triple and Neifi Perez sacrifice fly).

Meanwhile, Fleetwood's younger David was on top of his game. He held Windy City hitless through four innings. And then through five. And then through six. Would we see history today?

With Fleetwood now leading 6-0, Bush took the mound in the 7th. The first batter up was Mark Kotsay...who promptly lined a base hit into right field. With Bush's no-hit bid over -- and with some tough left-handed batters due up -- Fleetwood manager Rube Foster brought in Scott Downs to (as Monty Burns would say) "play the percentages."

Downs struck out Lyle Overbay, coaxed a groundout from Alex Rodriguez, and then struck out Dan Johnson as well. It appears it will be an easy win today for Fleetwood.

In the top of the 8th inning, though, new Fleetwood pitcher Ryan Vogelsong received a rude greeting from ex-Walker Kevin Mench. Mench took a mighty swing and deposited a solo homer over the left-field wall. And in the top of the 9th, Windy City scored two runs and loaded the bases. The tying run was now at first base with two outs.

Showing confidence in his young pitcher, Foster left Vogelsong in the game a bit longer. Windy City countered with pinch-hitter Ryan Church. This "David vs. David" matchup has suddenly morphed into a "Ryan vs. Ryan" one instead.

Vogelsong fired a payoff pitch to the plate, and Church did not make contact. Strike three, and game over. Final Score: Fleetwood 6, Windy City 3.

Fleetwood swept the series and improved its April home record to 6 wins against 1 loss.

Moline will next visit John Locke Field for a four-game series versus Fleetwood (April 16-19).
