April 24, 2006: A Seesaw Affair

With an April home record of 8-3 on the line, the Fleetwood Walkers now played host to the Hessville Everreadys. The first of the three games would feature a matchup of two veteran starting pitchers, Greg Maddux for Fleetwood and Woody Williams for Hessville.

Fleetwood would once again rest Jim Edmonds, inserting Josh Phelps into the lineup instead. While hurting the team's lineup and defense, Fleetwood would have Edmonds available off the bench if necessary.

Showing no signs of jet lag, Hessville jumped out to an early lead on a two-run Travis Hafner homer. But in the bottom of the 1st inning, Marcus Giles led off with a home run of his own. And when Luis Matos singled home Bobby Crosby in the bottom of the 3rd inning, the game was tied.

Hessville would grab the lead again in the 4th inning, exploding for three runs on a slew of singles and stolen bases. Maddux obviously did not have his best stuff today for Fleetwood.

In the bottom of the inning, Matos reached on a single after two quick outs. Giles would follow with a pop foul to the catcher, but the usually sure-handed Paul LoDuca saw the ball pop out of his mitt. Given a second life, Giles coaxed a walk out of Woody Williams.

Fleetwood's David Wright was up next, and capitalized fully on LoDuca's error. He crushed a home run to deep left-center field, and Fleetwood had tied the game for the second time today.

The seesaw scoring continued in the 5th inning. After two outs, Hafner launched another home run -- his second of the game -- and Hessville led once again by a score of 6-5.

Like two prize fighters trading blows, though, Fleetwood countered with a double from Crosby and an RBI single from Ramon Castro. For the third time today, Fleetwood had come back to tie the game.

Heading into the top of the 6th inning, Maddux needed to settle down and give his team a chance for its first lead. But after two quick outs, he surrendered a single and a stolen base to Mark Grudzielanek. LoDuca then delivered an RBI double, atoning for his earlier error. Hessville now held its fourth lead of the game, this time at 7-6.

Bobby Crosby came to the plate for Fleetwood in the bottom of the 7th, and smashed a Woody Williams pitch for a solo home run. Yet again, Fleetwood had erased a Hessville lead.

Both teams were held scoreless in the 8th inning. Derrick Turnbow, who had pitched out of a jam the inning prior, once again held Hessville scoreless in the top of the 9th.

Leading off the bottom of the 9th inning, Fleetwood turned to its bench and summoned Jim Edmonds to the plate. Hessville countered with left-handed reliever Rheal Cormier.

Today would belong to Edmonds, though, as he launched a pinch-hit home run into deep right-center field. And just like that, the game was over. Final score: Fleetwood 8, Hessville 7.

Tomorrow's matchup: Hessville (Mike Mussina) at Fleetwood (A.J. Burnett).
