June 1-3, 2006: Fleetwood at Charm City

June 1: Fleetwood 7, Charm City 6
This game was a back-and-forth affair, with each team trading runs throughout the game.

Fleetwood scored twice in the 2nd, only to see Charm City score thrice in the 3rd. Fleetwood regained the lead with two runs in the 4th only to see Charm City tie the game with 1 run in the bottom of the inning. Fleetwood took the lead again with a run in the 6th, but Charm City scored one run of its own in their next turn at-bat. Each team scored 1 run again in the 8th, making the score 6-6 through 8 innings.

Having already taken four leads only to see the Dragoons answer back, Jim Edmonds led of the 9th inning with a solo home run. The Walkers now led 7-6 and called on Derrick Turnbow to close out the game. He did so by pitching a perfect 9th inning, and the game was over.

June 2: Fleetwood 13, Charm City 0
A.J. Burnett faced off against Sidney Ponson, and the results weren't pretty for the home town fans. Fleetwood scored 1 run in the 3rd, 4 in the 4th, 1 in the 5th, and 7 in the 6th. Home runs by David Wright, Marcus Giles, and Jim Edmonds contributed to this scoring barrage.

On the other side of the ball, Burnett allowed only 3 hits and 2 walks through 7 scoreless innings. Ryan Vogelsong contributed 2 scoreless innings of his own, and Fleetwood won easily.

June 3: Fleetwood 15, Charm City 3
Still on fire from the day before, Fleetwood came out swinging. With 4 runs in the 1st, 2 runs in the 3rd, and 4 more runs in the 5th, the Walkers had once again pummeled Charm City's pitching staff.

Jim Edmonds in particular capped of a great series by hitting a home run in his 3rd straight game and driving in 5 runs. Meanwhile, Esteban Loaiza went 7 strong innings and won his 7th game of the season.

Fleetwood sweeps the series 3 games to 0. Box scores are below.

June 22, 2006: Believing In Buehrle



Fleetwood entered 2006 expecting Mark Buehrle to be an ace and a workhouse. April (2-2, 5.40) and May (1-2, 5.83) did not treat Buehrle well, though, and Fleetwood surely had begun to question its 7 year, $28 million investment.

Buehrle began to pay dividends in May, however. After losing a tough game against Charm City on May 5, Buehrle won his next three starts. He hoped to continue his hot streak versus Ocala, and deliver a series sweep of Ocala in the process. This task would not be easy, though, as the Ocelots would counter with their best pitcher, Roy Oswalt.

Both teams scored a run in the 1st inning. Ocala's run came via a solo home run by Derek Jeter, while Fleetwood's came via an RBI double by Miguel Cabrera. In a testament to the talent of both starting pitchers, these would be the only runs scored until the 7th inning.

In the 7th, Fleetwood broke the tie versus Ocala's bullpen. David Dejesus collected an RBI single off Tyler Walker, and now led 2-1. Fleetwood then scored two more runs in the 8th inning on a Marcus Giles sacrifice fly and a Luis Matos RBI single. The score was now 4-1 in favor of the Walkers.

Having pitched his team into the 8th inning, Buehrle left the game in favor of Derrick Turnbow. Turnbow held the 4-1 lead, and Fleetwood had won the game and swept the series. In doing so, the Walkers had sent a message to the league that they were indeed a force to be reckoned with in 2006.

June 21, 2006: Don't Get Mad...Get Eaton



Today's matchup featured A.J. Burnett for the hometown Fleetwood Walkers and Adam Eaton for the visiting Ocala Ocelots.

Although never appearing for Fleetwood, Adam Eaton was once a Walker himself before being traded back in the year 2000. He was sent to Ocala for Shannon Stewart and James Mouton (who was subsequently flipped to Plaza for Butch Huskey). This trade helped both franchises, as Stewart was a key member of Fleetwood's 2001 playoff team while Eaton was a key member of Ocala's 2005 championship squad.

Back to the game at hand, Fleetwood led 2-0 after 4 innings thanks to a sacrifice fly by Neifi Perez and an RBI groundout by Marcus Giles. Ocala put a run on the board in the 5th inning when Rich Aurilia hit a home run, but Giles answered in the bottom half of the same inning with a two-run triple. Fleetwood now led 4-1.

In the top of the 7th inning, Ocala drew to within one run on an RBI single from Tadahito Iguchi and a sacrifice fly from Aurilia. Again, though, Fleetwood would bounce right back...this time with a two-run homer from Javier Valentin in the bottom of the 7th.

Fernando Cabrera, Scott Downs, and Ryan Vogelsong relieved Burnett, and Fleetwood would go on to win by a score of 7-3. Fleetwood had now won the first three games of the 4-game set.

June 20, 2006: Pitchers' Duel



Of all the matchups in this four-game series, today's two pitchers were the least likely to lock horns in a pitchers' duel. But that's why they play the games.

Brad Hennessey was excellent for Ocala, allowing just 1 run in 6 innings. Not to be out done, though, Greg Maddux also brought his "A" game to John Locke Field. He provided Fleetwood with 6 scoreless innings, allowing just 3 hits and 1 walk.

Leading 1-0, Fleetwood's Bobby Crosby and David DeJesus led off the bottom of the 7th inning with back-to-back singles. With the heart of its order due up, it looked like the Walkers might blow the game open.

Ocala showed the grit of a champion, though, and enticed David Wright to ground into a costly double play. That left the Walkers with a man on 3rd base, but with 2 outs. To score an insurance run, they would need Derrek Lee to come through with a clutch hit.

Although in the midst of a disappointing season, Lee came through with an RBI triple. Fleetwood now led 2-0.

Fleetwood's bullpen closed out the game with 3 perfect innings, and the game was over. The Walkers had won the first two games of the four-game set.

June 19, 2006: The Test Begins



The arrival of late June corresponds with Fleetwood first real measuring stick of the season...namely, can the rebuilt Fleetwood Walkers compete with the elite of the National league? With 7 games each against the defending BRASSball champion Ocala Ocelots and also the über-powerful Metropolis Avengers, the world would soon find out.

The Walkers first home game versus Ocala would feature an excellent pitching matchup. Fleetwood called on Esteban Loaiza, while Ocala turned to Jake Peavy.

Fleetwood showed its power early on, scoring 9 times in the first 3 innings. This scoring was highlighted by a 3-run homer from David Wright, a 2-run double from Bobby Crosby, and a 3-run homer from Ramon Castro. This scoring knocked Peavy out of the game in the bottom of the 3rd.

Loaiza fared better than Peavy, taking full advantage of the run support his offense had provided. He threw strikes, allowing just one run through 7 innings on a Reggie Sanders home run. With his team comfortably ahead, Fleetwood manager Rube Foster brought in Juan Dominguez for the last 2 innings.

Fleetwood had sent a strong message to the defending champions, but also realized that the proud Ocala Ocelots would be ready to battle again tomorrow.

June 15, 2006: Three Pitchers, Three Gems?



Esteban Loaiza and Mark Buehrle had earned complete-game victories in Games 1 and 2 of this three-game set versus North Georgia. Fleetwood's Dave Bush hoped to make it 3 for 3. To do so, though, the Walkers would have to get by Yellow Jacket left-hander Ted Lilly.

In the bottom of the 2nd inning, Marcus Giles hit a solo home run and gave the Walkers a 1-0 lead. An RBI double by Ramon Castro in the 4th and a solo homer by David Wright in the 5th increased Fleetwood's lead to 3-0.

On the other side of the ball, Dave Bush did not disappoint the Fleetwood faithful. He allowed just 5 hits and 2 walks while striking out 8. In fact, aided by 3 double plays, Bush faced only 4 batters more than the minimum. Bush had collected his second shutout of the season, Fleetwood's starting pitchers had thrown their third complete game of the series, and Fleetwood swept the series from North Georgia.

Fleetwood would next play host to the defending champion Ocala Ocelots from June 19 through June 22.

June 14, 2006: Buehrle Mellows Yellows



Game 2 of this three-game series pitted the Fleetwood Walker's Mark Buehrle against the North Georgia Yellow Jacket's Paul Byrd.

Fleetwood got off to a great start, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning. A costly North Georgia error caused most of the damage when Corey Patterson dropped a Miguel Cabrera sacrifice fly. Both David Wright and Derrek Lee scored on the play, and Miguel Cabrera scored one batter later when Javier Valentin came through with an RBI single. Miguel Cabrera later added a 3-run homer in the 7th inning.

Meanwhile, Mark Buehrle was on top of this game. Buehrle went the distance on this day, allowing just 7 hits and 2 runs (1 earned) in 9 innings. Fleetwood had won again, this time by a final score of 6-2.

June 13, 2006: One Man's Trash, Another Man's Treasure



Some games give you a lot to write about. Some others, well...not so much. Today's game falls in the "not so much" category (although it did turn out well for Fleetwood). As such, you'll find only a short summary of the game in the space below.

However, in the interest of showing how this year's Fleetwood Walkers resurgence has come to be, you will also find some background on how Esteban Loaiza (the star of today's game) ended up wearing the famed orange-and-white flannels of the Fleetwood franchise.

The game itself featured Loaiza throwing a four-hit shutout, retiring the last 14 Yellow Jackets he faced in the process. With this strong pitching performance, Fleetwood won 6-0 and continued its winning ways in the friendly confines of Locke Field.

However, given Loaiza's strong performance all season long, the bigger story is how he became a Fleetwood Walker in the first place. Here is that story...

In 2004, Esteban Loaiza was a star. He posted the best season of his career for Toledo (19-10, 3.49 ERA), helping lead the Mudhens to a 2004 BRASSball championship. Slated to enter free agency after this storybook season, his future looked bright indeed.

However, the one-year "crystal ball" that BRASSball owners benefit from during each off-season showed that this Cinderella story would soon see Loaiza revert back to a more pumpkin-like pitcher the next year. As such, he did not attract many strong suitors on the free agent market.

Meanwhile, the rebuilding Fleetwood Walkers were coming off their worst season ever. The team had posted a 49-113 record in 2004, and things didn't look much more promising for 2005. Simply put, this was a team with little left to lose.

Looking to add depth to its weak pitching staff, Fleetwood's front office noticed a few points that made them bullish on Loaiza's future.

First, during his breakout season with Toledo, Loaiza had posted the strongest strikeout rate of his career. In a career-high 222 innings, he had amassed 168 strikeouts against just 61 walks. This type of strikeout rate historically bodes well for a pitcher's immediate future.

Second, experts around the league credited Loaiza's breakout season to the addition of a cut fastball to his repertoire. If true, it helped rule out the performance as being merely a "fluke" and implied that it may well have been actual growth in Loaiza's underlying skill set.

Third, given that Loaiza had indeed pitched a career-high 222 innings for Toledo, it might be expected that he would suffer from fatigue and/or injury the following season. If true, perhaps all Loaiza really needed was ample time for rest and recuperation.

Since patience is one thing the Walkers were in position to provide, Fleetwood decided to make Loaiza an offer. But how much to offer him? And for how long?

First, Fleetwood had to establish Loaiza's value for its 2005 ballclub. Looking in its "crystal ball," the Walkers knew he could provide approximately 30 starts and 190 innings in 2005.

These wouldn't be GOOD innings (Loaiza had posted a 5.70 ERA in his 2004 MLB season), but this was not a concern for the rebuilding Fleetwood franchise. Rather, the team was more concerned with: a) having enough innings to get through the upcoming 2005 season; and b) hoarding talented players that might one day form the core of a championship-caliber ballclub. Fleetwood thought Loaiza was a good gamble on both of these fronts.

In terms of 2005 value, then, the team decided that his 190 innings alone were worth approximately $1 million (as it would cost approximately that much to sign 2-3 free agents to match Loaiza's 190 innings of replacement-level pitching).

That was the easy part. The harder part was knowing what FUTURE value to expect from Loaiza. At a minimum, though, Fleetwood figured that Loaiza would be good for at least 200 league-average innings over the next two years. If true, that would provide the team with another $1 million or so of future value. Add that to the $1 million for 2005, and the total value was $2 million over 3 years.

With that math behind them, Fleetwood submitted a 3-year, $2.28 million offer (adding a bit to its bid for Loaiza's upside potential). And, for better or worse, that bid proved to be Loaiza's best offer. Having already done its due-diligence, Fleetwood finalized the offer and Loaiza was now a Walker.

The rest, as they say, is history. Loaiza's real-life performance did rebound in 2005 when he posted a 3.77 ERA in 217 MLB innings (the season that Fleetwood is enjoying during our current replay). And although Loaiza has once again fallen victim to the injury-bug in 2006, it's safe to say that Fleetwood has already gotten its money's worth out of the Loaiza contract.

June 7, 2006: Turning It Up to Eleven



Sometimes you're the windshield. Sometimes you're the bug. And on this day, Charm City most definitely put forth a hemipterous performance.

Oh, things certainly started well enough for the Dragoons. In fact, they held a 2-0 lead after 4 innings. But saying it went downhill from there is, well...a bit like saying that General Custer once had a bad day at the Little Big Horn River.

First, Fleetwood plated 5 runs in the bottom of the 5th inning. That's normally a pretty impressive feat. But then things REALLY got interesting for the Walkers in the bottom of the 6th. To wit:

Add it all up and that's 2 walks, 8 singles, 1 double, and 1 home run. The net result: 11 runs, 4 of which were driven in by David Wright alone. Now that's the type of performance that even Nigel Tufnel can appreciate.

Needless to say, these two innings proved to be a turning point in the game. Charm City was unable to come back, and Fleetwood won the game (18-2) and the series (3 games to 1).

Fleetwood's next homestand will be a 3-game series versus the North Georgia Yellow Jackets.

Fleetwood brought its 5-10 record against left-handed starters to the ballpark, hoping to defeat Charm City southpaw Brandon Claussen and reverse this troubling trend. Veteran right-hander Greg Maddux took the mound for Fleetwood.

Fleetwood fell behind early on a 3rd-inning RBI single by Dioner Navarro. The Walkers bounced back immediatly, however, scoring two runs in the bottom of the 3rd on a Ramon Castro solo home run and a Marcus Giles RBI double.

Charm City recaptured the lead in the top of the 6th after a Hee Seop Choi solo homer and a bases-loaded walk to Tike Redman. But Fleetwood answered the bell once again when Miguel Cabrera hit a 2-run homer in the bottom of that same inning. Fleetwood now led 4-3.

When David Wright padded Fleetwood's lead with a 2-run blast in the 7th inning, the game prooved out of reach for Charm City. Fleetwood had won 6-3, and beat a left-handed pitcher in the process.
