2013 BRASSball All-Star Game

2013 All-Star Game view from the Ohio River
BRASSball once again held its annual Midsummer Classic this week, hosted by the National League Central leading Fleetwood Walkers.

The hometown team was well represented in the game, with three players in the National League's starting nine (Mike Trout, Miguel Cabrera and David Wright) and two more in the bullpen (Zack Greinke and Tom Wilhelmsen). Only the Metropolis Avengers, with 6 players in the game (7 when counting August trade acquisition Carlos Ruiz) had more.

The American League kicked off the scoring in the top of the 1st on a Yadier Molina RBI double. However, the National League quickly responded with 3 runs in the bottom of the same frame, capped by a two-out, two-run Robinson Cano single.

Kemp HR gives NL a 4-3 lead
The American League then showed its prodigious power, hitting solo home runs in the 2nd (Ian Desmond), 3rd (Ryan Braun) and 4th innings (Matt Kemp) to take a 4-3 lead.

In the bottom of the 5th, the fans erupted when hometown hero Miguel Cabrera launched a homer of his own against Justin Verlander to tie the game. One inning later, the National League retook the lead when a Fernando Rodney wild-pitch allowed Derek Jeter to scamper home.

Still clinging to its one-run lead, the National League mounted another rally in the 8th. With the bases loaded and no outs, Miguel Cabrera once again energized his home stadium with a two-run RBI single. This hit opened the flood gates, with the National League scoring 4 more times in the frame before finally being retired.

Fleetwood teammate Tom Wilhelmsen then pitched a scoreless 9th, giving the National League the 11-4 victory. While the American League had hit 3 home runs to just one by the National League, the NL shockingly piled up 14 hits and 9 walks versus the talented American League pitching staff.

Frank Robinson presents Miguel Cabrera with MVP trophy
MVP honors were awarded to Miguel Cabrera (2-5, HR, 3 RBI), while the win went to Yu Darvish (1.2 innings, 0 runs allowed). Gio Gonzalez took the loss, giving up 1 run in 0.1 innings.

Next year's contest will be hosted by Metropolis, where the American League will certainly be looking to "avenge" this year's tough loss in Fleetwood.
