Kelvim Escobar (12-11, 4.26 ERA) vs. Vicente Padilla (17-8, 4.35 ERA)
Springfield dropped both games at Fleetwood, but its fans gave the team a warm welcome in their return to Duff Stadium. It was a must win for the Isotopes, as losing the contest would bury the team in a 0-3 hole in this best-of-seven series.
Tony Graffanino put Springfield on the board the 2nd inning. Following lead-off singles by Moises Alou and Justin Morneau, Graffanino hit an RBI double off Fleetwood starter Kelvim Escobar. The Isotopes added another run in the 3rd inning on back-to-back doubles by Orlando Cabrera and Raul Ibanez.
Fleetwood answered back in the 4th inning when Carlos Beltran hit a 2-run homer. Javier Valentin gave Fleetwood another run with a solo home run in the 5th inning, making the score 3-2 in favor of the visiting Walkers.
Springfield responded quickly, bookending a walk with two doubles in the bottom of the 5th inning to reclaim the lead. The last double was by Tony Graffanino, giving him 3 consecutive two-baggers through 5 innings.
In the bottom of the 6th inning, Springfield scored again on doubles from Mike Lieberthal and Orlando Cabrera. In all, the Isotopes had collected 10 hits off of Escobar through 5.1 innings...and 8 of those hits were doubles!
Meanwhile, Vicente Padilla turned in a workman-like performance for the Springfield faithful. He surrendered just 7 hits and 0 walks through 7 innings, and handed the game over to his bullpen with a 5-3 lead. Justin Speier and Chris Ray pitched two perfect innings to complete the game, and Springfield had earned its first win of the season.
Final score: Springfield 5, Fleetwood 3.
