April 9-11: Simi Valley at Fleetwood

Doug Fredricksen and I played this entire 7-game series via NetPlay. Strat has made a number of improvements to NetPlay in v14, making it an even more enjoyable experience. I recommend everyone give it a try. Oh, and if anyone wants to play their games vs. Fleetwood via NetPlay this year, just let me know!

Game 1: Chris Iannetta gave Fleetwood an early lead with a 3-run HR off Simi Valley's Doug Davis in the 2nd inning. Simi Valley responded with 2 runs in the 3rd inning, highlighted by a Alfonso Soriano home run. It appeared a close game was in store...but, no. Fleetwood plated 5 runs in the 3rd, another run in the 4th, and 5 more runs total in the 5th and 6th innings. That left very little drama -- and no important managerial choices for either side -- as the Walkers cruised to a 14-3 victory.

Game 2: This game pitted veteran RHP Jon Garland for Simi Valley against young RHP Zack Greinke for Fleetwood. The Vikings scored first, plating 2 runs in the 3rd inning. The Walkers responded with 4 runs in the 4th inning and another run in the 5th. When Ramon Castro singled and Mark Ellis followed with an RBI double, the score tightened to 5-3 with the tying run at the plate.

I (or, if you will, my manager Rube Foster) turned to lefty Hong-Chih Kuo in an effort to escape this jam. Kuo retired pinch-hitters Troy Tulowitski and Joey Gathwright in order, and the inning was over. After David Wright knocked in a run for Fleetwood in the bottom of the 7th inning, Kuo and Chad Billingsley closed out a 6-3 win for the Walkers.

Game 3: Fleetwood jumped out to an early lead with 3 first-inning runs off Simi Valley's Paul Maholm. The Vikings scored a run in the 5th inning, but the Walkers responded immediately with 5 runs of their own in the bottom of the same inning. The game was another blowout, with Carlos Beltran (3-4, 2 doubles) and David Wright (3-5, 2 runs) leading Fleetwood to a 10-2 victory.

Game 4: The series headed to Simi Valley for the next four games. This contest pitted Fleetwood's Daisuke Matsuzaka versus Simi Valley's David Bush (a former Fleetwood Walker himself). The Walkers were not kind to their friend and former teammate, scoring 2 runs against him in the 1st inning and 2 more in the 3rd. The game was 7-1 in favor of Fleetwood in the 7th before Simi Valley scored 3 runs against Matsuzaka and lefty reliever J.P Howell. That was as close at the Vikings would get, though, with Fleetwood winning the game 8-4.

Game 5: Fleetwood jumped out to an early 5-0 lead, but Simi Valley battled back with a run in the 6th. The Vikings rallied again in the 7th against Fleetwood reliever Chad Billingsley. With a 4-run lead and 2 of the next 3 hitters being righties, I thought Billingsley was the man. Carlos Gonzalez led off with a single, though, and one out later Mark Ellis drew a walk.

Despite two switch-hitters (Alexi Casilla and Greg Norton) coming up next, I kept Billingsley in the game. That decision would prove costly, as both Casilla and Norton delivered RBI singles to pull Simi Valley within two. Licking my wounds (and questioning my decision to stick with Billingsley), I called on lefty J.P. Howell to face Brian Giles. Alas, Giles came through with a 2-run triple to tie the game 5-5 before retiring Xavier Nady and Lyle Overbay to end the inning.

Fleetwood failed to score in the 8th, and I left Howell in the game. Lefty-masher Adrian Beltre -- hot for the entire series -- made me pay by promptly crushing a solo HR to give Simi Valley the lead heading into the 9th. I put a runner at 2nd with out out, but came up short. Simi Valley had won 6-5, and I was left questioning my bullpen management.

Game 6: Fleetwood's A.J. Burnett and Simi Valley's Doug Davis both struggled, allowing a cornucopia of baserunners in the early innings. After 5 innings, Fleetwood led 6-3. In the 6th, the Walkers plated 3 runs with a string of singles. The Vikings bounced back with 2 runs of their own, loading the bases against Burnett before drawing a bases-loaded walk and an RBI single off reliever Hong-Chih Kuo.

In the 8th inning, Brian Giles crushed a 2-run homer off Fleetwood's Jose Veras, tightening the score to 9-7. Luckily for Fleetwood, though, Veras settled down and the game ended without any further scoring.

Game 7: Zack Greinke continued his early-season success, pitching 8 innings of 2-run baseball for Fleetwood. Meanwhile, the Walkers scored a total of 8 runs off of Jon Garland, Javier Lopez, and Roy Corcoran. Adrian Beltre capped a red-hot series with a solo homer off Fleetwood's Heath Bell in the 9th, but the Walkers would win 8-3 in a game without much meaningful managerial maneuvering.

Fleetwood had taken the series 6 games to 1, and improved their season record to 11-3. Next up on the Walkers' schedule would be the Superior Blues.

A.J. Burnett reeled off a total of 11 strikeouts and catcher Chris Iannetta
went deep and had 6 RBI as the Fleetwood Walkers smashed the overmatched Simi
Valley Vikings, 14 to 3.

Iannetta enjoyed a big evening at the plate. He belted a three-run homer (his
1st of the season) in the 2nd inning and lined a base-hit which was good for
two runs in the 3rd inning. Fleetwood had 14 hits overall, while Simi Valley
had 9.

The win went to Burnett(1-0) who allowed 3 runs in 8 innings. Doug Davis(0-1)
was tagged with the loss. He allowed 7 hits and 4 walks in 2 and 2/3
innings.

Joal Kjarsgaard was asked about the performance of Burnett, 'He had his good
stuff out there tonight. The fans really get into it when the strikeouts
start mounting up - and that seems to give him even more adrenalin.'

Simi Valley Vikings by a score of 10 to 2 at John Locke Field.

Fleetwood took the lead off Paul Maholm in the first inning as they scored 3
runs on 4 base hits. That scoring would be all that was needed. Fleetwood
had 16 hits for the afternoon while Simi Valley had 9.

The win was credited to Ervin Santana(1-0) who went 8 innings allowing 2 runs.
Maholm(0-2) took the loss. He got hit pretty hard, allowing 11 hits and 2

First baseman Carlos Pena ripped 2 homeruns and had 5 RBI as the Fleetwood
Walkers defeated the floundering Simi Valley Vikings by the score of 8 to 4
at Dodger Stadium.

Pena had a big day with his bat. He doubled scoring a run in the 1st inning,
popped a two-run clout over the fence in the 3rd inning and lifted one out of
the park for a two run home run (his 3rd of the season) in the 7th inning.
Fleetwood ended up with 10 hits for the game while Simi Valley had 7.

The victory was credited to Daisuke Matsuzaka(1-0) who went 6 and 1/3 innings,
allowing 4 runs. David Bush(0-2) was the losing pitcher. 'I just got in the
box, looked for a pitch and swung,' Pena said. 'That's it.'

Adrian Beltre blasted a homerun as the Simi Valley Vikings defeated the
Fleetwood Walkers by a score of 6 to 5 at Dodger Stadium.

Roy Corcoran(2-0) got the win with a nice relief outing. He was stingy on the
mound, allowing just 1 hit and no walks in 1 and 1/3 innings improving his
ERA from 3.00 to 2.45. Fleetwood had a chance in the 9th but they came up
short.

Corcoran got help from Fernando Rodney who earned his 3rd save. J.P.
Howell(0-1) took the loss in relief. He pitched 1 and 1/3 innings giving up
3 hits and no walks.

When questioned, Doug Fredriksen remarked, 'It's been a while since a win felt
this good - heck, it's been a while since we had a win period!'

David Wright rocketed 2 homeruns and had 5 RBI at Dodger Stadium as the
Fleetwood Walkers beat the Simi Valley Vikings 9 to 7.

Wright was a one-man wrecking crew. He cleared the fences for a two-run home
run in the 1st inning, cracked a two-run shot (his 4th of the season) in the
3rd inning and laced a one-base hit which plated a run in the 6th inning.
Fleetwood took care of Simi Valley with no trouble in the bottom of the 9th.

A.J. Burnett(2-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 5 and 1/3 innings and
allowing 5 runs. The losing pitcher was Doug Davis(0-2). He got hit hard,
allowing 9 hits and 3 walks in 5 and 2/3 innings.

'I always am most impressed when a pitcher finds a way to win even without his
best stuff,' Joal Kjarsgaard said after the game. 'Burnett did not have
command of his pitches most of the afternoon, but he proved he really knew
how to pitch!'

April 1-4: Hessville at Fleetwood

My Fleetwood team had a remarkable season in 2008, setting a franchise record with 122 wins (besting a 117-win campaign in 2006). Those 122 wins were not enough to win my division, though, as the eventual world-champion Bloomington Bees bested me by one game for the division crown. Worse for my Fleetwood fans, the juggernaut known as the Bees also trounced the Walkers in the NLCS, winning the series handily in 5 games.

Ready to put that disappointment behind us, the 2009 version of the Fleetwood Walkers kicked off a new year by hosting the Hessville Everreadys. Gone from the Fleetwood squad were key players such as Barry Bonds (LF), Greg Maddux (RHP), and Scott Downs (LHP). Taking their places on my roster were a back-for-a-third-time Jim Edmonds (OF), a minor-league call-up Ervin Santana (RHP), and a back-from-injury Justin Duchscherer (RHP).

During the 2009 season, I'll recap each home game quickly. More interestingly (I hope), I will also point out any key decisions I had to make as a manager and evaluate them in hindsight. Perhaps we'll learn something in the process.

Play ball!

April 1: Opening Day pitted former Walker Derek Lowe against Fleetwood's Daisuke Matsuzaka. The Walkers drew first blood with a first-inning run. Hessville responded with 3 runs in the 4th, highlighted by a 2-run HR by Carlos Delgado.

Unable to mount any of sort of rally, I found my team down by 2 with 2 outs in the 9th. That said, a double by Jim Edmonds drove Lowe out of the game, and pinch-hitter Chris Iannetta followed with a walk to put the tying run on base.

Ryan Doumit followed with a clutch double that should have tied the game, but -- lo and behold -- I had neglected to pinch-run for Iannetta (1-9 running rating) with Asdrubal Cabrera (1-14 running rating) as I should have. That led to a 50/50ish roll to score Iannetta, which I just missed. Hessville thus emerged victorious with a 3-2 win, and I had only myself to blame.

April 2: My Fleetwood squad appeared to have an easy win in the bag after leading 7-0 through 5 innings. As such, I pinch-hit for both Nick Markakis and David Wright in the 6th inning to converse at-bats.

Hessville's Kevin Kouzmanoff hit a 3-run HR to close the gap to 7-4 in the 7th, however, making things mighty interesting. Luckily for me, though, Cody Ross bailed me out with a clutch 2-run HR in the bottom of the 7th inning, and the Walkers earned their first win of the year with a 10-6 victory.

April 3: The game was close through 5 innings, with Fleetwood hanging onto a 6-4 lead. When the Walkers scored 6 runs in the 6th inning, though the game was as good as over. Carlos Beltran (4-4, 2B, SB) led the charge in Fleetwood's 14-6 win.

April 4: Hessville's Randy Winn went 4-4 with not one but TWO hit-and-run doubles. However, Fleetwood would not be denied. The Walkers defeated Randy Johnson -- a key Fleetwood player the year before -- by a 5-4 margin. Zack Greinke earned the win. I had no overly important decisions, other than perhaps turning to Chad Billingsley in the 8th inning and B.J. Ryan for the save in the 9th. Both did their jobs easily.

Fleetwood traveled to Hessville for a 3-game set from April 5 through April 7. The Walkers would earn two wins on the trip. David Wright (3-4, 3B, 2 HR, 4 RBI) had a remarkable game in the first game of the series. Matsuzaka and the Walkers lost the second game by a 8-6 score, but my team rebounded to win the final game by a 5-3 score in 11 innings. Through 7 games, Fleetwood's record stood at 5-2.

One run was the difference at John Locke Field as the Hessville Everreadys
defeated the Fleetwood Walkers 3 to 2.

Hessville scored all of the necessary runs in the 4th inning scoring 3 runners
on 4 hits. The key offensive moment was provided by Carlos Delgado who
silenced the stadium when he popped a two-run clout over the fence (his 1st
of the season). Fleetwood had a chance to come back in the 9th but they came
up short.

Derek Lowe(1-0) got the win allowing 2 runs in 8 and 2/3 innings. Joe Smith
gained credit for his 1st save. Daisuke Matsuzaka(0-1) was tagged with the
loss.

Jim Liesenfelt was beaming after the game, 'Not only were we making good
contact, but a lot of balls we hit seemed to have 'eyes'! I just love winning
these tight ones! It was just our day - no doubt about it!'

Justin Duchscherer carried a no-hitter into the 6th inning and Cody Ross
homered and had 2 RBI as the Fleetwood Walkers defeated the Hessville
Everreadys by the score of 10 to 6 at John Locke Field.

Duchscherer(1-0) had a steady outing. He went 6 and 1/3 innings allowing 3
hits and 2 walks and surrendered 2 'long-bombs'. The right-handed
Duchscherer lost his chance for a no-hitter when J. Saltalamacchia homered
with one out in the 6th inning. Fleetwood ended up with 13 hits for the game
while Hessville had 7.

Chad Billingsley recorded his 1st save. John Danks(0-1) absorbed the loss.
He was unable to control the Fleetwood offense and allowed 9 hits and 3 walks
