September 11, 2006: Jim Edmonds = Rock Star

Facing off today were rookie Jason Vargas for Cincinnati and veteran A.J. Burnett for Fleetwood.

The Walkers jumped out to a quick lead on a 2-run HR by Jim Edmonds in the 2nd. The Royals came back to tie, though, scoring once on a triple by Jorge Piedra in the 3rd and again on a solo homer by Moises Alou in the 5th.

In the bottom of the 5th, Fleetwood jumped ahead again when Luis Matos and Marcus Giles hit back-to-back doubles. The Walkers' bullpen took it from there, throwing 4 scoreless innings to end the game. The oft-injured Eric Gagne picked up just his 2nd save of the season for Fleetwood, while Burnett earned yet another win.

September 10, 2006: A Big Rebound

Looking to make a pennant run, the Fleetwood Walkers traded away Aaron Cook and Gavin Floyd to the divisional rival Cincinnati Royals in the off season. In return, the team received the rights to pay Mark Buehrle a lot of money for a long time...7 years, $28 million to be exact.

That was a high price to pay for the Walkers, but championship opportunities don't come around every season. And while Buehrle got off to a slow start for Fleetwood in 2006, he had been a star contributor since.

This game saw Aaron Cook return to Fleetwood. He would not face Buehrle, but rather Esteban Loaiza. Coming into the series, Fleetwood had won 7 games in a row. They hoped to make it 8 today.

The Walkers got off to a good start, scoring one run in the 1st inning on a Javier Valentin RBI single. In the 2nd inning, though, Marcus Giles booted a groundball that should have been the second out of the inning. Two walks a single soon followed, and Cincinnati had scored two unearned runs and taken the lead.

As it turns out, the Cincinnati lead was short lived. Giles atoned for his error quickly, hitting a solo home run in the bottom of the 2nd inning to tie the game 2-2. Derrek Lee followed with a home run the next inning, and Fleetwood grabbed a one-run lead.

Both pitchers settled down, but Loaiza in particular was impressive. He pitched 6 innings, allowing no earned runs in the process. Fleetwood strong bullpen then took control, throwing three scoreless innings.

Marcus Giles would later add an RBI double, ending the day 3-4 with a 2B and a HR.

September 5-8, 2006: Fleetwood at Bloomington

September 5: Fleetwood 15, Bloomington 6
The Walkers pounded Bloomington's pitchers for 6 home runs. Miguel Cabrera led the charge, hitting two homers and driving in 3 runs. David Wright also had a big game, going 2-3 with a HR, 3 runs scored and 4 RBI. A.J. Burnett struggled a bit, but still earned the win.

September 6: Fleetwood 4, Bloomington 1
The Walkers scored in only one inning, but plated 4 runs in that frame. Highlighting the scoring was David Wright's 3-run homer off Bloomington rookie Matt Cain. Meanwhile, Greg Maddux held the Bees lineup in check with 7 strong innings.

September 7: Fleetwood 9, Bloomington 3
Fleetwood trailed 3-2 in the top of the 7th. After two quick outs, the Walkers placed 7 consecutive batters on base and plated 6 runs in the process.

This late explosion of runs made a winning pitcher out of Dave Bush (6 IP, 3 R, 1 BB, 8 K), and allowed Scott Downs to earn a three-inning save. Miguel Cabrera once again starred at the plate for Fleetwood, going 2-4 with a 2B and 3 RBI.

September 8: Fleetwood 12, Bloomington 2
Looking to complete a four-game sweep and run its winning streak to 7 games, the Walkers once again punished Bloomington rookie Scott Olsen. All in all, Fleetwood scored 10 runs against Olsen in just 4 2/3 innings. Derrek Lee did the most damage on the night, hitting a home run and driving in 5 runs.

Meanwhile, Mark Buehrle was very sharp for the Walkers. He went the distance, allowing just 2 runs while striking out 7 batters against zero walks.

September 4, 2006: Exterminated

Looking to earn a split of the four-game series, Bloomington scored two quick runs in the 1st inning. Alfonso Soriano and Nick Swisher knocked in the runs with an RBI single and an RBI double respectively.

Once again, though, Fleetwood answered back in a big way. In the bottom of the 1st frame, Miguel Cabrera connected off Bloomington rookie Francisco Liriano for a 3-run homer. The Walkers then added two more runs in the 2nd inning on a Bobby Crosby home run.

Given an early lead, Fleetwood starting pitcher Esteban Loaiza never looked back. He pitched his team into the 7th inning, allowing just 2 runs in the process. Scott Downs, Arthur Rhodes, and Derrick Turnbow pitched well in relief, and Fleetwood had won 3 in a row after a tough loss to open its September schedule.

September 3, 2006: Eruption

Poor Scott Olsen...he never knew what hit him.

Fleetwood bolted from the gates, plating 7 runs in the 1st inning alone. The eruption included back-to-back homers by David Wright and Derrek Lee, a two-run double by Bobby Crosby, a two-run single by David DeJesus, and a run-scoring balk by Bloomington relief pitcher Eude Brito. All in all, it took three Bloomington pitchers to escape the 1st inning alone.

Needless to say, things did not get much better for the Bees. Fleetwood starter Mark Buehrle shut down Bloomington's bats over 7 strong innings, and cruised to his 15th win of the season. Derrick Turnbow pitched the last two innings in the win.

September 2, 2006: A Wright Turn

Following its comeback win the day before, Bloomington grabbed a quick lead versus Fleetwood's Dave Bush. Nick Swisher did the initial damage, hitting a two-run homer in the 2nd inning. Fleetwood answered with two of its own in the 3rd inning, highlighted by a double from September call-up Ryan Zimmerman.

The Bees regained the lead in the 4th inning when Alfonso Soriano smashed a solo home run. Again, though, Fleetwood came back to tie the game...this time on 5th inning doubles from Bobby Crosby and David Wright. After 5 frames, the game was tied 3-3.

In the 6th inning, the momentum shifted to Fleetwood in a big way thanks to a 5-run explosion. A three-run homer by David Wright led the scoring, which also included a solo home run by Derrek Lee.

Fleetwood added two more insurance runs, making the final score 10-3 in favor of the Walkers. David Wright was the days' star, going 3-4 with two doubles, a home run, and 5 RBI.

September 1, 2006: Sledge Hammer!

Entering the final month in a dead heat with Maine, the Fleetwood Walkers looked to kick off their divisional schedule on the right foot. First up were the Bloomington Bees.

Rookie Matt Cain made his BRASSball debut for Bloomington, dazzling everybody in attendance with a complete game in his first start. By evening's end, he had allowed just two runs.

Luckily for Fleetwood, veteran Greg Maddux was nearly as impressive as Cain. Maddux threw 6 full innings, allowing just one run in the process. Another veteran, Arthur Rhodes, added another scoreless inning in the 7th.

With a 2-1 lead in the 8th inning, Fleetwood then turned to one of its rookies to slam the door on the Bees. Derrick Turnbow had pitched in tight spots all season, and looked to go two innings today to end the game.

Turnbow struck out Kevin Millar to begin the 8th, but then walked pinch-hitter Jim Thome. After retiring the always-difficult Ichiro Suzuki, the Walkers were looking ahead to the 9th.

Bloomington left fielder Terrmel Sledge had other ideas, though, and crushed a Turnbow offering deep into the black night. The two-run homer gave Bloomington the lead, and Cain retired Fleetwood in the 9th to end the game. Final score: Bloomington 3, Fleetwood 2.

Fleetwood Stats through August (140 games)

Fleetwood finished August with a strong 19-9 record (12-2 at home, 7-7 on road), keeping the Walkers tied for first with Maine in the NL Central race with a 96-44 overall season record.

Fleetwood's offense had a slightly down month by its standards in August, scoring just 150 runs (5.4 per game; Fleetwood's season average = 6.0 per game). Its pitching and defense came through with another good month, though, allowing only 102 runs (3.6 per game; Fleetwood's season average = 3.8 per game).

Given Fleetwood's total runs scored (833) and total runs allowed (530) on the season, its Pythagorean Record would be 100-40 (.712 x 140 games). As such, it appears the Walkers' record remains slightly below what might be expected (-4 wins versus expected record). Again, this is likely due to some large blow-out victories by Fleetwood during the summer.

Fleetwood continues to dominate right-handed starters (70-26, .729), while also steadily improving its record versus lefty pitchers (5-9 through May; 13-12 through June; 24-17 through July; 26-18 through August).

Fleetwood's most exceptional players so far on the season are Miguel Cabrera, Derrek Lee, Jim Edmonds, A.J. Burnett and Esteban Loaiza. In the month of August only, Derrek Lee (.365/.413/.765), Jim Edmonds (.284/.433/.617), Miguel Cabrera (.321/.408/.468), Javier Valentin (.364/.488/.636), Mark Buehrle (4-0, 1.74 ERA), A.J. Burnett (3-1, 3.68 ERA), Arthur Rhodes (1-0, , 9 IP, 0 H, 0.00 ERA), Scott Downs (0-1, 17 IP, 1.59 ERA), and Fernando Cabrera (1-2, 11.1 IP, 2.38 ERA, 3 SV) all excelled.

Players who have struggled the most during the season are Marcus Giles and Ryan Doumit. In August specifically, Jose Guillen (.177/.236/..219), David Wright (.234/.328/.421), Esteban Loaiza (3-1, 4.74 ERA), and Greg Maddux (2-2, 4.50 ERA) had difficult months.

All in all, August was yet another great month for Fleetwood. Although it lost a game in the standings to Maine, the team continues to lead its division and is a virtual lock to make the playoffs for the first time since 2003.

Looking ahead to September, Fleetwood will face its divisional foes in the NL Central...including 7 games versus the co-leader Maine Black Flies. Overall, the opposing teams in this division have averaged 77 wins against 63 losses so far in 2006, making it a tough conclusion to the regular season. At the very least, though, the Walkers will get a chance to battle for the divisional crown versus the rival Maine Black Flies.

August 29-31, 2006: Fleetwood at Box City

August 29: Fleetwood 4, Box City 5
Fleetwood began this series against Box City with a 4-2 lead heading into the bottom of the 9th inning. Leading the charge for the Walkers were Miguel Cabrera at the plate (1-4, HR, 2 RBI) and Mark Buehrle on the mound (8 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 6 K).

Derrick Turnbow entered the game in the 9th inning, looking to nail things down. Three batters later, though, he walked off the field with the loss. First, he walked Jason Giambi. Next, Matt Holliday hit a single. Darin Erstad then excited the hometown faithful with a 3-run walk-off homer.

August 30: Fleetwood 6, Box City 2
Following a tough loss the day before, Fleetwood rebounded with a strong all-around effort. After 4 scoreless innings to begin the game, the Walkers exploded for 4 runs in the 5th inning and 2 more runs in the 6th. Starring in the rallies were Javier Valentin (2-run HR in 5th, double in 6th) and Jim Edmonds (2-run HR in 6th).

Meanwhile, Esteban Loaiza continued his great season by throwing 7 strong innings. He allowed just 4 hits and 2 runs while striking out 7 against just 1 walk. Rookie Fernando Cabrera did most of the remaining work, pitching the last 5 outs for the save.

August 31: Fleetwood 12, Box City 6
The rubber match of the series pitted the experienced A.J. Burnett for Fleetwood versus the young D.J. Houlton for Box City. Neither pitcher would enjoy their first innings on this day, but Houlton found things particularly rough.

After just six batters, Fleetwood scored 5 runs against Houlton. A grand slam by Jim Edmonds knocked Houlton from the game, and an RBI double by Marcus Giles added a sixth run to the scoreboard.

Burnett gave up three runs of his own in the bottom of the 1st inning, and also seemed destined for an early shower. He was able to settle down, however, and did not allow another run until the 5th inning.

Fleetwood's offense continued to add runs to the scoreboard, including a 2-run homer by Javier Valentin and a solo home run by Derrek Lee. By day's end, Fleetwood had won 12-6.
