August 28, 2006: Boxing Up Box City

With 3 wins in 3 days, Fleetwood looked to sweep Box City. The Parcelmen, though, had other ideas and showed their grit throughout the day's game.

Fleetwood dominated early, scoring 5 runs in the first 2 innings. Derrek Lee led the charge, hitting a two-run homer in the 1st inning and a solo blast in Fleetwood's 3-run 2nd inning.

Box City bounced right back in the next two innings. First, Parcelmen designated hitter Jason Giambi blasted a 3-run homer in the 3rd inning. Box City then added two more runs in the 4th inning, and the game was tied 5-5.

The see-saw affair swung back to Fleetwood's side in the 5th and 6th innings. First, David Wright hit a solo home run to reclaim the lead for the Walkers. Fleetwood plated three more runs in the following inning thanks to an RBI single by Marcus Giles and back-to-back bases-loaded walks to Derrek Lee and Miguel Cabrera. Fleetwood now led 9-5.

Again, Box City responded to the challenge. In the top of the 7th, outfielder Jason Bay hit a two-run homer, and drew his team within 2 runs of a tie. It appeared the momentum had swung back to Box City.

In the bottom of the 7th inning, though, Fleetwood once again flexed its muscle. Giles came through again for the Walkers, driving in two runs with a one-out single. Fleetwood now led 11-7.

The Parcelmen still did not give up. An RBI groundout by Reed Johnson and an RBI triple by Maicer Izturis in the 8th inning shrunk Fleetwood's lead to 11-9. Once again, the game was hanging in the balance.

Fleetwood's strong bullpen would not be denied, though. Arthur Rhodes and Fernando Cabrera did the heavy lifting for Fleetwood's bullpen on this day, and the sweep was complete. Final score: Box City 9, Fleetwood 11. The win went to Fleetwood starter David Bush, while the loss went to Box City starter Nate Robertson.

August 27, 2006: The Professor

Although close through 4 innings, Fleetwood won easily by a score of 10-4. Starring for Fleetwood at the plate were Derrek Lee (2-5, 2B, 3B, 2 RBI), Jim Edmonds (4-5, 2 2B, RBI) and David DeJesus (3-5, 2 2B, RBI).

More important, though, was the pitching of Greg "The Professor" Maddux. Maddux threw 7.1 innings on the evening, allowing just 1 run on a Jason Bay homer. Brian Lawrence took the loss for Box City, surrendering 14 hits in 6 innings.

August 26, 2006: D.J. vs. A.J.

An interesting pitchers' duel emerged between Box City's D.J. Houlton and Fleetwood's A.J. Burnett.

D.J. Houlton pitched a complete game for Box City, allowing just 3 hits. However, he walked 8 batters in the process and thus surrendered 2 runs.

A.J. Burnett pitched in-and-out of trouble through 5 innings before making way for Fleetwood's bullpen. His teammates were up to the challenge, though, pitching the final 4 innings in the Fleetwood win.

Derrick Turnbow once again shined in relief, pitching the final 5 outs for the save. David Wright also had a good game, hitting a home run in the 1st inning.

August 25, 2006: The Comeback Kids

Fleetewood welcomed the powerful Box City Parcelmen to John Locke Field for a 4-game set. Pitching in the series' opening game were Carl Pavano for the Parcelmen and Esteban Loaiza for the Walkers.

Box City jumped out to an early 4-1 lead. Leading the charge for the Parcelmen were Jay Gibbons (who hit a solo home run in the 2nd inning), Miguel Tejada (who hit an RBI double in the 3rd inning), and Jason Bay (who hit a 2-run double in the 3rd inning).

In the 5th inning, Fleetwood drew within one run of Box City thanks to a solo homer by left fielder David DeJesus and a bases-loaded walk by catcher Javier Valentin.

When Miguel Cabrera drove in a run with a double in the 7th inning, the game was tied. Ramon Castro soon followed with a two-run double, and Fleetwood led 6-4.

With two outs in the 8th inning, Fleetwood manager Rube Foster called on Derrick Turnbow to close out the game. Turnbow did just that, and Fleetwood had earned a come-from-behind victory.

August 19, 2006: All Wright Now

Brett Myers, Plaza's starting pitcher, could not escape the 1st inning. Esteban Loaiza, Fleetwood's starting pitcher, pitched 7 innings. He also struck out 9 batters versus 0 walks.

However, 9 innings were not enough to determine a winning team.

Michael Young hit a lead-off homer in the 1st for Plaza, giving the Lions a quick lead. However, Fleetwood's Miguel Cabrera countered in the bottom of the 1st inning with a 3-run blast, knocking Myers from the game.

Both teams continued to score in the early innings. After 4 frames, the game was tied 4-4.

In the top of the 8th inning, an error by Marcus Giles led to an unearned run. Giles atoned for this mistake in the bottom of the same inning, hitting a solo home run that once again tied the game. After a scoreless 9th inning, the score remained 5-5 and the game headed to extra innings.

After scoreless innings in the 10th and 11th, David Wright delivered a walk-off single in the bottom of the 12th inning. Fleetwood had won, and swept the 3-game series in doing so.

August 18, 2006: A Burly Buehrle

With expectations high after a large free-agency contract, Mark Buehrle got off to a horrible start for the Fleetwood Walkers in 2006. Through his first 10 starts, Buehrle was just 2-4 with a 6.04 earned run average.

By August, however, Buehrle turned things around. From late May through the end of July, Buehrle showed his talent with an 8-4 record and a 3.77 earned run average. And with 2 strong victories at home already in August, the resilient lefty looked to keep things going versus Plaza.

Miguel Cabrera provided Buehrle with an early lead, smacking a 2-run double off of Plaza starting pitcher Ervin Santana. Little did anyone know at the time, but those runs would be all Buehrle would need.

By the end of the evening, Buehrle had thrown a complete game four-hitter. He walked just one batter, and allowed only 1 unearned run. Fleetwood had defeated Plaza again, this time by a score of 7-1.

August 17, 2006: Two-Man Gang

Having won 5 of its 7 home games thus far in August, Fleetwood next welcomed the Plaza Lions to town. With a 67-45 record through its first 112 games, the Lions would surely provide the Walkers with another tough test.

As it turns out, Fleetwood's David Wright and Jim Edmonds were up the challenge. Wright gave the Walkers an early 1-0 lead with a solo homer in the 1st inning. After Plaza turned the tables with two runs in the top of the 2nd inning, Edmonds knotted the game at 2-2 with a solo home run of his own in the bottom of the frame.

Wright continued his strong game with a 2-run single in the bottom of the 4th. And in the bottom of the 8th inning, Edmonds capped the night with his second homer. Fleetwood had won 7-3.

David Bush was the beneficiary of this offensive support, while Derrick Turnbow earned the save. The next game in this exciting series would feature young righty Ervin Santana for Plaza and veteran lefty Mark Buehrle for Fleetwood.

August 12, 2006: Two More Killer B's Emerge

While Kris Benson and Dave Bush starred the day before, two other players with "B" surnames would soon prove to be killers too.

Fleetwood grabbed an early lead on an RBI single by Miguel Cabrera in the 1st inning. A single by David Wright in the 3rd inning would increase the team's lead to 2-0, while a homer by David DeJesus in the 6th inning made the score 3-0.

Meanwhile, Mark Buehrle dominated the Derry Heifers lineup. Through 7 shutout innings, Buehrle allowed only one hit, one walk, and one hit batter with no runner reaching farther than first base. Such a strong performance was a great sign for the Fleetwood faithful given Buehrle's struggles earlier in the season.

In the 8th inning, Buehrle finally proved mortal when David Dellucci and Rondell White led off the inning with back-to-back doubles. One run had scored, another runner was at second base, and the tying run was at the plate.

Fleetwood's Rube Foster took the ball from a spent Mark Buehrle, turning the game over to young reliever Fernando Cabrera. Cabrera was shaky at first, committing a balk that moved White to third base. Ramon Martinez then followed with an RBI groundout. Cabrera retired the next two batters to end the inning, but the game was now just 3-2 in favor of the Walkers.

In the bottom of the 8th inning, pinch hitter Barry Bonds stepped to the plate for Fleetwood versus New Hampshire starter Scott Elarton. Looking for an insurance run, Bonds took a big swing. Unfortunately for Bonds, though, he came up empty and struck out.

Bobby Crosby was up next, and he achieved what Bonds was unable to do. Specifically, he launched a blast to left-center field for a solo home run. This run extended Fleetwood's lead to 4-2 and gave its bullpen a valuable insurance run.

The Walkers turned to Derrick Turnbow to pitch the 9th inning. After pitching 3 innings two days earlier, Turnbow looked sharp. First he struck out Cliff Floyd. He then struck out Mike Sweeney, putting Fleetwood within one out of victory.

Jason Varitek made things exciting with a two-out double, but ex-Walker Laynce Nix could only managed a fly ball. David DeJesus grabbed the can of corn, and the game was over. After losing the first game of the series, Fleetwood had come back to win the next three and take the series.

August 11, 2006: No "B" Game for Benson or Bush

Having won in extra innings the day before, Fleetwood looked to make it two victories in a row. New Hampshire certainly had other plans in mind.

The stars of the day would be both teams' starting pitchers: Kris Benson for the Derry Heifers and Dave Bush for the Walkers.

Fleetwood grabbed an early lead with a run in the 2nd inning. First, catcher Javier Valentin led off with a double. A ground ball by Jim Edmonds then advanced Valentin to third base, and a sacrifice fly by ex-Heifer Jose Guillen drove him home.

Neither team scored in the 3rd or 4th innings, but New Hampshire put its first run on the board in the 5th inning on a solo homer by ex-Walker Laynce Nix. All players in the recent Fleetwood/New Hampshire team seemed to be playing with chips on their shoulders!

Both Benson and Bush continued their duel through 7 full innings. Bush was the first to exit the game, making way for reliever Fernando Cabrera with one out in the 8th inning. Cabrera retired Cliff Floyd and Jason Varitek to end the inning.

New Hampshire pulled Benson from the game to begin the 8th inning, replacing him with left-hander Alan Embree. Fleetwood countered with pinch-hitter Luis Matos, who surprised everyone by hitting a lead-off home run (just his 3rd homer of the season). Embree quickly left the game in favor of righty Francisco Cordero, who retired the next three Walkers in order.

With Derrick Turnbow having pitched 3 innings the day before, Fleetwood manager Rube Foster stuck with Fernando Cabrera to begin the 9th inning. Cabrera promptly surrendered a lead-off walk to David Dellucci, though, ending his evening. In his place came ex-Heifer Kelvim Escobar.

Escobar first faced Mike Sweeney, striking him out for the second time in as many days. He then enticed pinch-hitter Omar Quintanilla into a ground ball which forced out Dellucci at second base. New Hampshire's final batter was Rondell White, who grounded into another force play. The pitchers' duel was over, and Fleetwood had won by a score of 3-2.

August 10, 2006: Making An Extra Effort

Having lost two home games in a row and with an August home record of just 2-2, Fleetwood realized it would need to improve soon or risk falling behind Maine in the hotly-contested NL Central race. In its mini-slump, the Walkers had failed to take advantage of scoring opportunties while also making uncharacteristic errors in the field.

Greg Maddux took the mound for Fleetwood, and held New Hampshire scoreless through 4 innings. Meanwhile, Derrek Lee continued his hot August by hitting a 2-run homer in the 1st inning.

The Derry Heifers finally came up with a run in the 5th inning. Cesar Izturis continued his strong series with a two-out single and a stolen base. Laynce Nix, a Fleetwood Walker farmhand just a couple of weeks earlier, then drove Izturis home with a double.

Things continued to go downhill for Maddux in the 6th inning. First, Cliff Floyd led off the inning with a solo home run. Jason Varitek followed with a single, and promptly scored on a David Dellucci triple. New Hampshire now led 3-2 with another potential run at third base...all with nobody out. Greg Maddux's night was over.

Fleetwood manager Rube Foster brought in Kelvim Escobar to face his old teammates. Escobar did not disappoint his new fans, striking out Mike Sweeney and then retiring Ryan Freel on a flyout. When Dellucci attemped to score on the play, Jim Edmonds unleashed a perfect throw to the plate. Dellucci was out, and the Derry Heifer lead was still just 3-2.

After both teams were held scoreless in the 7th inning, Derrek Lee excited the hometown crowd with another home run, his second of the game. This solo homer tied the game at 3-3 and gave the Walkers new life.

Needing a win badly, Foster called on Derrick Turnbow in the top of the 9th inning. Turnbow pitched a scoreless inning, but Fleetwood was unable to score a run in the bottom of the inning. The game headed to extra innings.

Turnbow pitched another scoreless inning in the 10th, but again the Walkers could not plate a run. Surprisingly, Turnbow headed out for a third inning of work. He was up to the challenge, though, and again threw a scoreless frame.

In the bottom of the 11th inning, Fleetwood finally came through. After Kazuhisa Ishii struck out Miguel Cabrera to lead off the inning, Ramon Castro drew a walk. Jim Edmonds, a star with his arm earlier in the game, now became a star with his bat as well. He launched a 2-run homer deep into the Ohio night, and the game was over. Final score: New Hampshire 3, Fleetwood 5 in 11 innings.
