July 12-15, 2006: Fleetwood at Springfield

July 12: Fleetwood 1, Springfield 5
Having been swept at Fleetwood, Jon Kjarsgaard and his Isotopes were in no doubt on thin ice with Springfield owner C. Montgomery Burns. Burns is not one to suffer defeat lightly, and would likely release the hounds if the losing ways continued at Duff Stadium.

Whatever threats Burns may have verbalized to his team prior to the game, it appears the warnings must have worked...especially on the heretofore struggling Keith Ginter, who went 2-4 on the day with his first home run on the season.

This offense, combined with excellent pitching from Mark Mulder (6 IP, 5 H, 1 R) and David Weathers (3 IP, 1 H, 0 R), gave Springfield its first victory over Fleetwood this season. Final score: Fleetwood 1, Springfield 5.

July 13: Fleetwood 4, Springfield 0
Fleetwood's A.J. Burnett continued his all-star season by leading the Walkers to a shutout victory over Springfield. Burnett pitched into the 9th inning, surrendering just 6 hits and 2 walks against 8 strikeouts.

Arthur Rhodes relieved Burnett with two runners on board in the 9th inning, retiring Springfield's next three hitters in order to end the game.

Also staring for Fleetwood were David DeJesus, who hit a solo home run in the top of the 6th inning, and Jim Edmonds, who robbed Lew Ford of an extra-base hit in the bottom of the 6th.

July 14: Fleetwood 3, Springfield 4 (10 innings)
Leading 3-1 in the bottom of the 7th, Fleetwood's Rube Foster turned to his usually reliable bullpen to save the game for Esteban Loaiza (6.1 IP, 6 H, 1 ER). Loaiza had given up a one-out double to ex-Walker Shannon Stewart, and left the game in favor of Scott Downs.

Downs quickly surrendered a run on back-to-back singles before giving way to Arthur Rhodes. Rhodes escaped further damage, but Fleetwood's lead was now cut to just 3-2.

Foster brought in Juan Dominguez in the bottom of the 8th inning. Springfield's Kelly Johnson greeted Dominguez rudely, hitting a solo home run to tie the game 3-3. The Isotopes nearly scored another run on a Justin Morneau double, but Dominguez and the Walkers managed to escape the inning with a tie still intact.

Neither team was able to score in the 9th inning, and the game headed into extra innings. David Weathers held Fleetwood scoreless in the 10th, and set Springfield up for a possible win in the bottom of the inning.

Hank Blalock drew a walk off Fleetwood's Derrick Turnbow to begin the 10th. Cal Eldred then came in to pitch, but quickly gave up a single to Morneau. A groundout by Stewart put runners on 2nd and 3rd with only 1 out. With right-handed Angel Berroa on deck, Foster directed Eldred to intentionally walk lefty Scott Hatteberg to set up a potential double play. Unfortunately for Fleetwood fans, though, Berroa would knock in the winning run with an RBI groundout. The game was over, and Springfield had earned a come-from-behind victory over its rival Fleetwood.

July 15: Fleetwood 10, Springfield 6
The final game of the season between these two foes was a wild and woolly affair, with a run being scored in every inning except the 3rd and 9th. In total, the teams combined for 16 runs on 29 hits.

Fleetwood grabbed an early lead on a Derrek Lee homer and a Bobby Crosby RBI single. Springfield countered with an RBI double by Scott Hatteberg, and the score was 2-1 in favor of Fleetwood after 2 innings.

After a scoreless 3rd inning, the Walkers extended their lead in the top of the 4th. Jermaine Dye hit a 2-run homer, and Luis Matos followed later with an RBI single to extend Fleetwood's lead to 5-1. Springfield answered back in the bottom of the inning, though, scoring twice on a Angel Berroa sacrifice fly and a David Ross RBI single. Fleetwood's lead was now just 5-3.

The Walkers bounced right back, scoring two more runs in the 5th inning. Jermaine Dye was once again in the middle of the action, hitting a solo home run (his 2nd HR of the day). A based-loaded walk by Marcus Giles accounted for Fleetwood's other run.

Again, though, Springfield would not surrender. Hank Blalock scored a run after hitting a double in the 5th inning, and Springfield scored two more runs in the 6th inning following a Kelly Johnson triple. David Ross drove Johnson home with an RBI single, and went to third base one batter later when David DeJesus dropped a Jose Vidro fly ball for a 2-base error. Lew Ford drove Ross home with an RBI groundout, and Fleetwood now led by only a 7-6 margin.

The Walkers quickly answered the bell themselves, scoring a run in the 7th inning on a lead-off single by Dye (his 4th hit of the day) and a two-out double by DeJesus. Fleetwood then added more insurance in the 8th inning, scoring twice on a Derrek Lee RBI double and a Jermaine Dye RBI single. The score was now 10-6 in favor of Fleetwood, which is how the game would end after a scoreless 9th inning.

Dye ended the day going 5-5 with 2 home runs, 4 runs scored, and 4 runs batted in. In doing so, he helped Fleetwood earn a split of the 4-game series at Springfield. Fleetwood also took the season series, winning 5 of the 7 contests.

Somewhere, Monty Burns is in no doubt stewing in anger and plotting his revenge in 2007.

July 11, 2006: Shooting for a Sweep

With a potential series sweep lurking, Fleetwood turned to Mark Buehrle. Opposing him for Springfield was rookie Ezequiel Astacio.

Springfield grabbed its first lead of the series with a run in the top of the 1st inning. The Isotopes earned that run on a lead-off walk by Kelly Johnson, a one-out double by Jose Vidro, and an RBI groundout by Jeff Conine.

That one-run lead would stand until the 3rd inning, when Fleetwood responded in a big way. After lead-off singles by Jermaine Dye and Neifi Perez, David DeJesus loaded the bases with a walk. David Wright was up next, and he smashed a fastball to deep left-center field for a grand slam. Fleetwood now led 4-1.

Buehrle and Astacio found their grooves in the middle innings, with both pitchers holding their opponents scoreless from the 4th inning through the 7th.

In the top of the 8th, Springfield tallied a quick run when Vidro greeted Buehrle with a lead-off home run. After two more Isotopes reached base, Fleetwood manager Rube Foster brought in Arthur Rhodes to put out the fire. Rhodes did so wonderfully, getting Angel Berroa to ground into an inning-ending double play.

Fleetwood responded in the bottom of the inning. Jim Edmonds, continuing his hot hitting in the series, launched a 3-run homer and Fleetwood now led 7-2. It seemed the game was over.

In a rivalry like this, though, no lead is safe. Fleetwood relief pitcher Juan Dominguez quickly learned this lesson after surrendering a lead-off single to Hank Blalock and a walk to pinch-hitter Justin Morneau. Springfield right fielder Kelly Johnson then drove a double into the right-field corner, scoring a run and putting the tying run on deck in the form of hot-hitting Jose Vidro.

Sensing the urgency of the situation, Fleetwood's Rube Foster brought in Derrick Turnbow to slam the door on Springfield. Turnbow quickly dispatched Lew Ford on a strikeout, and then retired the dangerous Jose Vidro on a groundout.

Down to its last out, Springfield's Jeff Conine also fell victim to Turnbow's slider and struck out. The game was over, and Fleetwood had earned a sweep of its arch rival Springfield Isotopes. Final score: Springfield 3, Fleetwood 7.

With a win the day before, and with victories in 7 of its 8 July games, Fleetwood looked to continue its hot streak. The Walkers would send Esteban Loaiza to the mound, while Springfield countered with crafty left-hander Mark Redman.

Feeding off the palpable energy at John Locke Field, Redman's adrenaline got the best of him in the 1st inning. After striking out Marcus Giles to begin his game, he gave up back-to-back singles to David Wright and Derrek Lee. A walk to Miguel Cabrera loaded the bases, and another walk to Jim Edmonds forced in a run. Jermaine Dye followed with a sacrifice fly before Redman struck out Ryan Doumit to end the inning. After one inning, Fleetwood led 2-0.

After scoreless 2nd and 3rd innings, Fleetwood added another run in the 4th. Edmonds led off with a double, and Luis Matos drove him home two outs later with an RBI single. Springfield responded immediately in the top of the 5th, scoring 2 runs on a David Ross RBI double and a Jose Vidro RBI single. Fleetwood now led 3-2.

In the bottom of the 5th inning, Fleetwood answered Springfield's 2-run rally with 2 runs of its own when Edmonds launched a long home run with Cabrera aboard. An RBI groundout by Derrek Lee in the 6th inning gave Fleetwood another run, and the Walkers led 6-2 after 6 innings.

In the bottom of the 8th inning, Fleetwood broke the game wide open by scoring 4 runs. This 4-run rally included an RBI single by Jim Edmonds, who enjoyed a great day at the plate. In 5 trips to the plate, Edmonds went 3-3 with a double, a home run, 4 RBIs and 2 walks. Esteban Loaiza was similarly dazzling on the mound, pitching a complete-game while striking out 11 batters against just 1 walk.

Final score: Springfield 2, Fleetwood 10. Tomorrow's matchup: Ezequiel Astacio for Springfield versus Mark Buehrle for Fleetwood.

July 9, 2006: Sibling Rivalry

Yankees versus Red Sox. Michigan versus Ohio State. Duke versus North Carolina. These are among the most storied rivalries in all of sports. But none of these can compare with the fiercest rivalry of them all: BRASSball's very own Springfield versus Fleetwood.

Deep family connections set the Springfield vs. Fleetwood rivalry apart from all others. On one side you have Jon Kjarsgaard, manager of the Springfield Isotopes. On the other you have his older brother Joal, general manager of the Fleetwood Walkers. As far as sibling rivalries go, perhaps only the Brothers Gallagher can compare.

The feud between these once-close brothers dates back to 2001. At that time, Jon Kjarsgaard was employed by his brother Joal with the Fleetwood Walkers, serving as the team's roving bunting instructor. This was a position Jon had earned through years of childhood dedication, and it was a field of study that Jon held in the highest of esteem. In his own words, Jon once said "No other baseball strategy has withstood the test of time quite like the bunt...other than, perhaps, the fake-to-third/throw-to-first pickoff attempt. I love that one!"

In any event, a sudden resignation by Fleetwood's Head Bunting Instructor Bert Campaneris left Jon's dream job within his grasp. However, rather than promote his brother to this esteemed position, the elder Kjarsgaard brother went outside the organization to hire Felix Fermin instead. Disgraced by this decision, Jon immediately disowned all ties with not just Fleetwood, but with his brother Joal as well. Joal, shocked by the severity his brother's actions, was all too happy to sever the relationship as well.

Jon quickly landed on his feat, catching on as manager of the Springfield Isotopes. It seems the Isotopes owner, C. Montgomery "Monty" Burns, knew of Jon's vaunted bunting expertise and commitment to fundamental baseball. Long a fan of baseball strategy himself, Burns did not hesitate in bringing this uniquely talented wunderkind into his organization.

Jon wasted no time in making his mark in Springfield. After a rebuilding year in 2002, the younger Kjarsgaard led Springfield to back-to-back divisional crowns in 2003 and 2004, and then into the playoffs again in 2005 as a wild card entry.

Meanwhile, his brother Joal struggled to keep up. Fleetwood missed the playoffs by one game in 2002 and lost quickly as a wild card in 2003. After that fleeting success, Fleetwood then endured two dismal years of rebuilding and introspection in 2004 and 2005.

In terms of head-to-head matchups, the younger Kjarsgaard has shown steady year-by-year improvement versus his former mentor. In 2002, Joal's Fleetwood Walkers beat Jon's Springfield Isotopes 5 times in 7 games. Jon would rebound the next year, taking the season series 4 games to 3. Jon built on that success in 2004 by taking 5 of the 7 games, and then improved again in 2005 by winning 6 of the 7 matchups:

2002: Springfield (73-89) 2 wins; Fleetwood (85-78) 5 wins
2003: Springfield (100-62) 4 wins; Fleetwood (91-71) 3 wins
2004: Springfield (99-63) 5 wins, Fleetwood (49-113) 2 wins
2005: Springfield (95-67) 6 wins, Fleetwood (60-102) 1 win

In 2006, however, it seems the pendulum might have finally swung back to the side of the Fleetwood Walkers. Entering July, Fleetwood had regained its footing in the league with a stellar 57-27 record. In Springfield, the opposite was true. After 3 years of championship-caliber baseball, the Isotopes had entered a rebuilding phase of their own and held a nearly opposite record of 23-61.

The 2006 season series opened with the Springfield Isotopes visiting the Fleetwood Walkers for a 3-game set. Facing off on the mound were lefty Cliff Lee for Springfield and righty A.J. Burnett for Fleetwood.

The Walkers grabbed an early lead when David Wright launched a solo home run off Lee in the first. Springfield answered back in the 2nd inning, though, capitalizing on a Justin Morneau triple and a Shannon Stewart RBI single.

Fleetwood grabbed the lead again in the bottom of the 2nd inning, scoring twice on a sacrifice fly by Luis Matos and on an RBI double by Neifi Perez. Again, though, Springfield would come back, first on an RBI single by Lew Ford in the 3rd and then on a sacrifice fly by Keith Ginter in the 4th. The game was tied 3-3 after 4 innings.

Derrek Lee, in the midst of a disappointing 2006 campaign, came through for Fleetwood in the 5th inning. His 2-run homer broke the tie, and put Fleetwood up 5-3. The home run proved to be the clinching moment of the game, as the Walkers would go on to add 5 more runs while the Isotopes were held scoreless. Game 1 had gone to Fleetwood by a lopsided score of 10-3.

July 5-7, 2006: Fleetwood at Charlevoix

July 5: Fleetwood 5, Charlevoix 3
Having swept Charlevoix at Fleetwood, the Walkers headed to Castle Farms for a three-game set against the same Tigers team.

Marcus Giles, in the midst of a lackluster season, brought his best to the field on this day. By the end of the game, Giles had gone 4-5 with 3 doubles. Miguel Cabrera and David DeJesus also played big roles in the Fleetwood win, with each hitting a solo home run.

July 6: Fleetwood 6, Charlevoix 8
Fleetwood five-game winning streak versus Charlevoix came to an end. Ivan Rodriguez (1-4, 2 RBI) and ex-Walker Frank Catalanotto (3-4, 2 R) led the way with Ryan Madson picking up the win in relief of Jaret Wright.

David Wright (2-4, 2B, 2 RBI), Miguel Cabrera (2-5, 2 2B, 2 R), and Jermaine Dye (3-4, 2B, RBI) gave it their best for Fleetwood, but fell just short in the end.

July 7: Fleetwood 6, Charlevoix 2
Greg Maddux pitched one of his best games of the season, and Fleetwood earned its second win of the series and 6th win of the month. In total, Maddux threw 7 shutout innings and struck out 9 batters without issuing a walk.

Marcus Giles continued his excellent series by collecting two hits, including his 9th home run of the season. David Wright and Miguel Cabrera also hit homers in the Fleetwood win.

July 4, 2006: 4th (Win) of July

Fleetwood started its July schedule with a bang, earning a series sweep of the Charlevoix Tigers on the 4th of July.

The Walkers wasted no time on Independence Day, scoring 3 runs in the 1st inning including a 2-run homer by all-star David Wright (his 19th of the season). Fleetwood scored three more in the 3rd when Derrek Lee smashed his 20th home run of the season, and the Walkers never looked back.

A.J. Burnett had an easy day on the mound, throwing just 5 innings before making way for the bullpen. Scott Downs and Ryan Vogelsong would finish things up adequately, and Burnett left the stadium with his 15th win of the season against just 4 losses.

July 3, 2006: Maddux the Magnificent

Greg Maddux turned in a masterful performance, reminding everyone who watched why he's destined for the BRASSball Hall of Fame. In throwing his 3rd complete game of the season, Maddux surrendered just 6 hits, walked none, and struck out 8.

A balanced attack gave Maddux plenty of run support. Leading the way was Miguel Cabrera, who went 2 for 4 with a double and a home run.

Fleetwood stormed out the gate with 4 first-inning runs, knocking out young Charlevoix lefty Jeff Francis after just 2 outs. Key hits in the inning were home runs by both Derrek Lee (his 19th) and Jim Edmonds (his 23rd). Edmonds would add in a 2-run double in the 4th and a bases-loaded walk in the 8th, finishing the day with 5 runs batted in.

Meanwhile, Esteban Loaiza proved strong on the mound. A 3-run homer by Chris Burke in the 5th inning was the only scoring he allowed in pitching his 2nd complete game of the season.

July 1, 2006: Cabrera-fied Air

Fleetwood's July schedule started off with a bang thanks to its star third baseman Miguel Cabrera. With 4 hits in 5 at-bats, including two doubles, Cabrera led Fleetwood to victory over Charlevoix by a score of 8-2.

Charlevoix did threaten in the 7th inning when it put the tying run on deck with just 1 out for the heart of its order. Fleetwood manager Rube Foster quickly brought in closer Derrick Turnbow to put out the fire, which he did by retiring Ivan Rodriguez and Adrian Beltre to end the threat. When the Walkers scored two insurance runs in the 8th inning, the game was over.

With his strong game, Cabrera raised his batting average to .325 and collected his 31st and 32nd double of the season.
