May 17, 2006: Outlawed

Still reeling from its sweep at the hands of the Toledo Mudhens, the Fleetwood Walkers began a 3-game homestand versus the Santa Barbara Outlaws. Although Toledo posted the best April record in BRASSball (23-5), Santa Barbara 's 18-10 April record proved it was no slouch either.

Chad Tracy gave the Outlaws an early lead by depositing an A.J. Burnett pitch over the fence for a 2-run homer. Burnett would later surrender a solo home run to Luis Gonzalez, but those three runs were all Fleetwood would allow on the day.

However, those three runs were just enough for Santa Barbara's Freddy Garcia. He allowed just 2 runs in 7.1 innings before handing the game over to his bullpen. Justin Duchscherer and Todd Jones collected the last 5 outs easily, and the game belonged to Santa Barbara.

BOXSCORE: 2006 Santa Barbara Outlaws At 2006 Fleetwood Walkers 5/17/2006

May 13-15, 2006: Fleetwood at Toledo

May 13: Fleetwood 1, Toledo 12
Toledo scored 7 runs in the first 2 innings and never looked back. The Mudhens collected 20 hits on the day and allowed just four.

May 14: Fleetwood 3, Toledo 11
Technically speaking, this was an improvement for the Walkers versus the day before. Fleetwood's Mark Buehrle allowed 10 runs (!) and 17 hits (!!), but he did show his impeccable control by walking nobody. Well done, Mark!

May 15: Fleetwood 1, Toledo 2
The good news: Fleetwood's pitchers finally managed to hold Toledo's potent lineup in check. The bad news: the Walkers' hitters still failed to show up, scoring just 1 run on 5 hits.

Toledo sweeps the 3-game series, and the Walkers mercifully head home to lick their wounds. Box scores are below.

May 12, 2006: Castr-ation

Ramon Castro did his best Babe Ruth imitation on this day. He drove in 4 runs, scored 3 of his own, and collected 11 total bases.

Summarizing each Castro at-bat:
- Bottom of 2nd: Castro hits a 3-run homer, giving Fleetwood a 3-2 lead.
- Bottom of 4th: Castro hits a solo home run, pulling Fleetwood within 1 run at 4-5.
- Bottom of 6th: Castro grounds into a double play. (Hey, nobody is perfect.)
- Bottom of 8th: Castro hits a 2-out triple, then scores on a wild pitch to give Fleetwood a 6-5 lead. (No pinch-runner needed.)

Derrick Turnbow earned the win with 3 scoreless innings of relief, and Fleetwood takes 3 of 4 games from the potent Toledo Mudhens.

May 11, 2006: James Patrick Edmonds

Jim Edmonds hits a 2-run homer in the 1st, and follows that with a bases-loaded double in the 2nd. That's 5 RBI in the first 2 innings. Not bad.

Derrek Lee gets in on the action too, hitting a 3-run shot in the 4th inning (with Edmonds on base, no less).

A.J. Burnett earns another win, although not without some struggles along the way.

May 10, 2006: Mad Dog

Although Fleetwood's efforts fell just short the day before, the Walkers came out swinging today.

Powered by a 3-run homer by Miguel Cabrera and a 2-run blast from Luis Matos, Fleetwood plated 5 runs in the 1st inning alone.

While the Walkers would only score one more run on the day, Greg Maddux made the lead hold up with a solid complete-game performance (9 innings, 9 hits, 3 runs).

May 9, 2006: Holy Toledo

Having won 6 of 7 games against Boston, Fleetwood's next opponent was the Toledo Mudhens. With an April record of 23-5, Toledo staked an early claim for the 2006 BRASSball championship.

The first game of the series showed why Toledo is so formidble. Gary Sheffield crushed a 2-run home run in the top of the 1st inning, while Freddy Sanchez added another early run with a sacrifice fly in the 2nd inning.

Fleetwood mounted a comeback to tie the game in the late innings, but Toledo also proved to be opportunistic. After a two-base error by Fleetwood second baseman Marcus Giles, Oscar Robles drove in the eventual winning run with a double. Toledo had won again.

May 3, 2006: Winnin' Ugly

What appeared to be an easy Fleetwood win turned out to be anything but.

Fleetwood jumped all over Boston early, leading 7-0 after 4 innings. Mark Buehrle was shaky, but pitched in-and-out of trouble.

To Boston's credit, though, the team never gave up after its rough start. After finally getting to Buehrle late, Boston tied the game in the 9th when Wily Mo Pena smashed a 2-run home run versus Derrick Turnbow. The game was suddenly tied and headed into extra innings.

For some reason, Boston never did turn to its bullpen. Granted, Fogg had thrown 6 scoreless innings since giving up seven runs in the first 4 frames....but when Boston sent him out for his 11th inning of work, it seemed to be pressing its luck.

Sure enough, Jim Edmonds led off the bottom of the 11th with a walk-off home run. Although it was not a game Fleetwood should be proud of, a win is a win.

Toledo will visit Fleetwood next for a four-game series (May 9-12).

May 2, 2006: Bush-whacked!

Fleetwood continued its winning ways, led by pitcher Dave Bush. Although Boston's lineup will never be confused with Murderers' Row, Bush spun a four-hit shutout for his first complete game on the season.

Also making news in this game were Fleetwood's catchers. Javier Valentin started the game, going 2 for 3 with a pair of home runs. Ryan Doumit pinch hit for Valentin in the 7th inning, and smashed a homer of his own.

Tomorrow's matchup: Boston (Josh Fogg) at Fleetwood (Mark Buehrle).
