April 26, 2006: Bring Out the Brooms?

Looking to sweep its second home series in April, Fleetwood called upon Esteban Loaiza. Hessville would counter with Ryan Franklin.

Hessville hit Loaiza hard early, allowing 8 hits through 4 innings. Hessville was unable to capitalize fully on these hits, though, and entered the bottom of the 4th inning with just a 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the 4th, Fleetwood would explode for 4 runs. Key moments were an RBI single by Miguel Cabrera and an RBI double by Jermaine Dye. Fleetwood then scored three more runs in the 3rd inning behind a 2-run double by Derrek Lee and a sacrifice fly by Dye. Fleetwood now led 7-2.

Loaiza was a different pitcher, and did not allow a hit in the 5th and 6th innings. After allowing a two-out double to Bill Mueller in the 7th, Fleetwood summoned Scott Downs to face Carlos Delgado.

Downs retired Delgado to end the 7th inning, but surrendered a Travis Hafner single and a Jeromy Burnitz double to lead off the 8th. After retiring Michael Tucker on an RBI groundout, Fleetwood removed Downs in favor of Ryan Vogelsong. Vogelsong quickly retired both Jonny Gomes and Mark Grudzielanek, holding Hessville to just one run in the inning. Fleetwood's lead now stood at 7-3.

Fleetwood looked for an insurance run or two in the bottom of the 8th, and called on power-hitting catcher Javier Valentin to pinch-hit versus Hessville reliever Julian Tavarez. Valentin did not disappointing, crushing a deep home run to left centerfield. Fleetwood now led 8-3.

Hessville, desperate to avoid a sweep, came out swinging in the top of the 9th inning. Three of its first 4 batters reached base, and the heart of its order was up. This bases-loaded, one-out jam forced Fleetwood to bring in yet another reliever in Juan Dominguez.

With the potential tying run on deck, Dominguez's first assignment would be to face Hafner. Dominguez was up to the challenge, though, striking out the Hessville slugger. And when Dominguez forced Burnitz to hit a fly ball to right field, the game appeared over.

Unfortunately for Fleetwood, though, right fielder the ball popped out of Jermaine Dye's mitt for a two-base error. Two runs scored, and Michael Tucker was now up. Tucker drew a walk, loading the bases and putting the tying run on first.

Taking no more chances, Fleetwood brought in Derrick Turnbow to face Jonny Gomes. Gomes had homered back in the 2nd inning, and looked to do the same here. Gomes did get the ball into the air, but only managed to hit a routine flyball. The game was over, and Fleetwood had swept the series. Final score: Fleetwood 8, Hessville 5.
