Today's game featured Fleetwood's A.J. Burnett versus Hessville's Mike Mussina. Given the quality of both pitchers, a good game seemed in store.
Fleetwood jumped out to an early lead when Derrek Lee hit a 2-run homer in the 1st inning (his first home run at home this season). Fleetwood added another run in the 2nd inning when Jermaine Dye scored on a double-play groundout by Josh Phelps.
The Walkers did not let up, scoring two more times in the 3rd inning (on a David DeJesus 2-run home run) and once again in the 4th inning (on a Marcus Giles sacrifice fly). After 4 innings, Fleetwood led 6-0.
In the top of the 5th inning, Hessville finally put a run on the scoreboard thanks to an RBI single by Carlos Delgado. A hit-by-pitch to Travis Hafner loaded the bases, but Burnett escaped further damage thanks to a double-play groundout by Jeromy Burnitz. Fleetwood now led 6-1 through 5 innings.
With his pitch count mounting, Fleetwood manager Rube Foster removed Burnett with one out in the 7th inning. Burnett's final line on this day: 6.1 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 6 K. Now pitching for the Walkers would be Juan Dominguez.
Dominguez collected the last two outs of the 7th inning easily, but ran into trouble in the 8th. Hafner and Burnitz led off with back-to-back doubles, scoring a run in the process. After a Bill Mueller foulout Fleetwood turned to its bullpen once again, this time calling on Ryan Vogelsong.
Vogelsong cruised through the 8th inning and pitched around a Neifi Perez error in the 9th. Fleetwood had won again, and looked to sweep the series. Final score: Fleetwood 6, Hessville 2.
Tomorrow's matchup: Hessville (Ryan Franklin) at Fleetwood (Esteban Loaiza).
