With the Moline Cutters coming into town, it may be the first true test for the Fleetwood Walkers this season. To wit:
- First, Moline features a formidable lineup. This group includes sluggers Brian Giles, Larry Walker, Troy Glaus, and Victor Martinez.- Second, its bullpen is just as impressive...running at least five pitchers deep (Trevor Hoffman, Juan Rincon, Salomon Torres, Jay Witasick, Andy Sisco).
- Finally, the Cutters feature some impressive starting pitching. Among this group are ace Carlos Zambrano, Mark Prior, Matt Morris, and ex-Walker Livan Hernandez.
Game 1 of this series would feature both team's fifth starters: Mike Maroth for Moline, David Bush for Fleetwood. Both starters pitched well, with the game remaining scoreless through 3 innings.
In the 4th, Fleetwood drew first blood on a J.D. Closser RBI single. Fleetwood then loaded the bases with two outs, but was unable to score another run when relief pitcher Salomon Torres retired Neifi Perez to end the inning.
In total, Torres would go on to pitch four scoreless innings. In doing so, he allowed Moline's offense to mount a rally. In the top of the 6th inning, Brian Giles and Troy Glaus each delivered RBI singles. That gave Moline a 2-1 lead...a lead they would not relinquish.
