My offense should be good. I have last year's National League MVP in Derrek Lee. I have a 4-time all-star in Jim Edmonds. I have a young stud in Miguel Cabrera and a developing one in David Wright. And I have a host of other good (if unexceptional) hitters in Marcus Giles, Jermaine Dye, and David DeJesus.
But on any given day, a seemingly pedestrain pitcher is capable of performing like the second coming of Cy Young.
Through five innings, Brett Tomko absolutely shut me down. He allowed just 1 hit, walked nobody, and struck out 7. For reasons not completely clear to me, however, Windy City pulled him after a leadoff single by Ramon Castro in the 6th. I can only assume Tomko was on a strict pitch count this cool spring day.
Giovanni Carrara relieved at that point and (after hitting DeJesus with a pitch) set me down quickly too. Perhaps it didn't even matter who was pitching.
But continuing on an early season theme, this year's edition of the Fleetwood Walkers does not give up easily. In the bottom of the 7th, the Boys in Orange finally put a run on the board with an RBI single from Ramon Castro. And in the 8th inning, David Wright and pinch-hitter Jim Edmonds delivered clutch two-out hits and gave Fleetwood a late 3-2 lead.
When Derrick Turnbow retired the side in the 9th, the game was over. Fleetwood had won again.
No thanks to Brett Tomko, of course.
Tomorrow's matchup: Windy City (David Wells) at Fleetwood (David Bush).
