April 2, 2006: Going for Two

For what it's worth, I can't imagine writing a recap of EVERY one of my 81 home games this year. (Nor can I imagine anyone being particularly interested in reading about 81 make-believe games.) But hopefully I can find some way to populate this blog with periodic updates that some of you might find vaguely interesting.

If you have any ideas, feel free to post some "comments" after any post. I'm open to suggestions. (Except ones from Metropolis. Damn Avengers.)

In any event, I'll do another "game recap"-style post until I figure out how to best drive this new blog-mobile of mine.

FLEETWOOD, U.S.A. (AP): Game 2 of this season-opening series would pit Fleetwood's Greg Maddux versus Tinley's Erik Bedard.

Maddux's Fleetwood debut would not be his sharpest performance ever, but it did allow him to show his veteran moxie. Maddux's final line on the day: 7 innings, 7 hits, 3 runs, 4 walks, 2 strikeouts.

Most impressive (or lucky) was Maddux's ability to pitch out of two bases-loaded, nobody-out jams with minimal damage. In the 2nd, he allowed just one run thanks to a Rod Barajas popout and a Luis Matos catch-and-throw double play (with Tony Graffanino caught at the plate). In the 5th, he also allowed only one run thanks to a Ben Broussard popout and a Graffanino double-play groundout. (Poor Tony. There's always tomorrow, I guess.)

With the game tied 3-3 after 5 innings, Fleetwood would grab the lead in the 6th. Fleetwood shortstop Bobby Crosby, making his first start of the season, plated a pair of runs with a two-out double off of Claudio Vargas (in for relief of Bedard the batter before). With an RBI double already to his credit earlier in the game, Crosby appeared primed to be the star of the day.

But baseball has a funny way of making a humble man out of anyone.

Heading into the 9th with a 6-3 lead, Fleetwood sent Ryan Vogelsong out to pitch. After surrendering a leadoff walk to Matt Murton, he coaxed what appeared to be a sure-fire double-play groundball from Tinley catcher Rod Barajas. Unfortunately for Fleetwood, though, the usually sure-handed Crosby booted the ball. That brought the tying run to the plate for Tinley with nobody out.

After Vogelsong gave up a wild pitch and a single -- and with the tying run now on first base -- Fleetwood manager Rube Foster had no choice but to bring in Derrick Turnbow for the second straight day.

Facing the top of Tinley's lineup, Turnbow did not disappoint. He quickly earned two outs on a double-play groundout from Ray Durham. While this play cut Fleetwood's lead to one run, it also cleared the bases with 2 outs.

Tinley sent up pinch-hitter J.T. Snow, who coaxed a walk from Turnbow. The tying run was now aboard, but Turnbow retired former Fleetwood Walker Raul Ibanez on a popout. The fire was out, Bobby Crosby could breathe easier, and Fleetwood had won again. Final score: Fleetwood 6, Tinley 5.

W: Maddux. L: Bedard. SV: Turnbow.

Tomorrow's matchup: Tinley (Jae Seo) at Fleetwood (A.J. Burnett).
